Slight lean to boards but binding sound; tidemarks along top portion edge of text block with text only briefly affected; pages else unmarked; a Very Good copy. <br /> <br /> Third of four volumes of Poe's works published after his death; this volume is notable as it includes the "Memoir of the Author" by his rival Rufus Griswold. The memoir is notorious for its inaccuracies portraying Poe as a madman habitual drug user and an alcoholic. Griswold's falsehoods were perpetuated in subsequent editions of Poe's work. Tall 8vo. iv 1-334 pp. illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and 5 steel engraved plates as well as text engravings. Bound in 1/2 leather and marbled paper boards with the title on a black morocco label on the spine in gilt. Moderate rubbing and edge wear to the boards. Blank end papers with some soiling. Hinges tight. Text mostly clean with some light scattered browning. In the summer of 1839 Poe became assistant editor of Burton's Gentleman's Magazine. Both volumes are bound together in three quarter black leather with grey cloth covered boards and gilt title to spine. Minor rubbing to boards and wear to edges of boards. Also contains a review of Rufus Griswold's "Female Poets of America" on page 415. This is the first printing of "The Bells"; however "A Valentine" was originally printed in the Evening Mirror in 1846 under the title "To Her Whose Name is Written Below." Both volumes are bound together in three-quarter dark green leather with brown and black marbled paper covered boards titled in gilt on the spine. There are four raised bands ruled in gilt to the spine. There is a three inch split to the head of the front joint and it appears that the binding has been repaired amateurly at some point. Both interior hinges are cracked; however the boards and textblock remain firmly attached. Rubbing to boards with a few small open tears to the marbled paper on the rear cover. Wear to edges of the boards and corners. Spots of foxing and soiling to interior. Both volumes include numerous full page engravings some colored. The indexes for both volumes appear at the end of the book. Attractive despite the noted wear. Volume 4 has 416 pages; Volume 5 has 389 pages. PER/011118. John Sartain & Co hardcover
