Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque
First edition of Poe's first published collection of tales one of only 750 sets printed. Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque contains many of Poe's finest tales including "The Fall of the House of Usher" and "MS. Found in a Bottle."<br /><br />The publication of these twenty-five tales marked the culmination of Poe's long struggle to get his prose tales into book form. In 1833-34 Poe had failed to see into print his planned Tales of the Folio Club. Most of these tales with additions were published as Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque. The title is derived from Sir Walter Scott's 1827 essay "On the Supernatural in Fictitious Composition: "the tales of the arabesque are the product of an intense imaginative effort and the tales of the grotesque tend toward satire or burlesque." In the preface to the collection Poe defends himself from those critics who have charged him with 'Germanism' and gloom writing "If in many of my productions terror has been the thesis I maintain that terror is not of Germany but of the soul--that I have deduced this terror only from its legitimate sources and urged it only to its legitimate results."<br /><br />Poe's only remuneration for the publication of these 25 tales was twenty copies of the book. Lea & Blanchard the publisher retained the profits if any were ever realized. Although the title page is dated 1840 the book was actually published at the end of 1839.Two volumes. Beautifully bound in full mottled calf spines gilt black and red morocco labels marbled endpapers. Page 213 of vol. 2 can occur with the numbers 213 as in the present copy or 231. Current scholarship most notably BAL v. 7 1983 does not assign priority to either state. Foxing as usual. A handsome copy.<br /> Lea and Blanchard hardcover

Probable first printing of this edition. The classic containing all of the twenty-eight famous illustrations by Edmund Dulac. Unpaginated but about 186 pages. Decorative bell-themed endpapers. All tissue guards in place. Printed by Henry Stone and Son Ltd. Banbury. Bookplate of former owner Eleanor Stanley Field Pue 1885-1971 who was a sitter for oil painting portraits. Age-toning to paper. No foxing but some staining to top edge of text block. Corners bumped. Some fraying at head and tail of spine. Spine darkened as usual but front and rear covers are remarkably bright and clean. Binding lightly shaken and starting to lose some integrity in a few spots but all pages are still intact. The book remains solid. A desirable copy of the Poe classic with all the Dulac illustrations. Additionally there is a one page book illustration by Dulac from The Dreamer of Dreams by The Queen of Roumania laid in by the previous owner. <br /><br /></p> Hodder and Stoughton hardcover

Poe is believed to have written "The Bells" in May 1848 and submitted it three times to Sartain's Union Magazine a magazine co-owned by his friend John Sartain until it was finally accepted. He was paid fifteen dollars for his work though it was not published until after his death in the November 1849 issue. It was also published in Horace Greeley's the New York Daily Tribune newspaper on the front page of its October 17 1849 issue as "Poe's Last Poem". Inspiration for the poem is often granted to Marie Louise Shew a woman who had helped care for Poe's wife Virginia as she lay dying. One day as Shew was visiting Poe at his cottage in Fordham New York Poe needed to write a poem but had no inspiration. Shew allegedly heard ringing bells from afar and playfully suggested to start there possibly even writing the first line of each stanza. . Sergei Rachmaninoff 18731943 composed a choral symphony The Bells Op. 35 based on a Russian adaptation of the poem by Konstantin Balmont. The symphony follows classical sonata form: first movement slow movement scherzo and finale thus honoring the poem's four sections. <br/><br/> The Easton Press unknown
