Fine book with just a hint of toning to spine; about fine slipcase with a faint area of soiling and a few very light scratches to rear panel. With a "Recent Press Books" review of the book laid in. Overall a luxurious and haunting edition of two short stories from the 19th century American master of horror. This fine press book contains two macabre short stories by Edgar Allan Poe: "The Facts in the Case of Monsieur Valdemar" and "The Story of Hop-Frog." In "Monsieur Valdemar" the narrator conducts an experiment on a man dying of tuberculosis mesmerizing an early form of hypnosis him shortly before his impending death. The man is kept in a trance-like state somewhere between life and death for months until the trance is broken and his body rapidly decays. The story was first published simultaneously in Broadway Journal and American Review: A Whig Journal in December of 1845 without any statement that it was fiction which led many readers to believe that it was a retelling of a true event. In "The Story of Hop-Frog" the title character is a dwarf and jester for a cruel and joke-loving king. When the king abuses Hop-Frog's friend a young girl named Trippetta Hop-Frog plots a fiery revenge against the king and his seven loyal ministers. "Hop-Frog" was first published in 1849 in The Flag of Our Union newspaper and it has been suggested that the story was Poe's way of taking revenge against his literary critics. . With six original black and white lithographs by Charles Keeping. A fine copy the binding square and tight the boards clean and sharp. The contents are clean throughout and without previous owners' stamps or inscriptions. Complete with the very good original slipcase that is cracked at the surface of the spine and open edge remaining structurally sound. Issued in a limited edition of 100 copies this example is numbered 46 and is signed by Charles Keeping on the limitation page. Two of Edgar Allan Poe's short stories 'The Facts in the Case of Monsieur Valdemar' and 'The Story of Hop-Frog' atmospherically illustrated with striking gothic lithographs by the twice Kate Greenway award-winning artist Charles Keeping celebrated for his large body of work for the novels of Rosemary Sutcliff. 'The Facts in the Case of Monsieur Valdemar' details the experiments of a mesmerist who hypnotises a man who is about to die of tuberculosis which subsequently stops him from dying until he is awakened months later. It was first published in 'Broadway Journal' and 'American Review' in 1845 without indication that is was fictional leading many readers to believe that the account was a scientific report. 'The Story of Hop-Frog' is about a court jester and a court dancer with dwarfism who take revenge on a cruel king. The fifth book issued by Chimaera Press. Original maroon morocco elaborately stamped in gilt all page edges gilt.<br/> <br/> First Appearance of Poe's intense psychological tale involving the title character being haunted by a whispering doppelgänger -- who leads the narrator to insanity and a duel to the death but of whom. The tale is set at a boy's school in England based on the Manor House School in Stoke Newington which Poe had attended during the years 1817-1820. This first appearance occupies 25 pages of THE GIFT -- soon after which it appeared in the October 1839 issue of Burton's Gentleman's Magazine where it is noted that it is "from The Gift of 1840"; in November 1839 but dated 1840 "William Wilson" was collected in Poe's TALES OF THE GROTESQUE AND ARABESQUE. When Poe subsequently 1842 wrote a review of Hawthorne's TWICE-TOLD TALES -- a review that is regarded as Poe's expression of his own theory of the short story a review regarded as the first American attempt to define the short story as a literary genre -- he noted that the tale "Howe's Masquerade" bore numerous similarities to his own "Willam Wilson." Also included is Harriet Beecher Stowe's 45-page tale "Deacon Enos" about the dishonest property dealings between a deacon and a squire. THE GIFT is bound in the original maroon morocco that is elaborately stamped in gilt on both covers and on the spine. This copy is bright and would be FINE except that on the border of the rear cover there is a one-inch area where the sheen of the leather and a narrow gilt line are affected; all nine plates none pertains to the Poe story are present and have much less foxing than usual. The original yellow endpapers are intact. Blanck 16130 and 992.
