In 1827 he entered the U.S. Army and was stationed at Sullivan's Island South Carolina which was to be the setting for his story The Gold-Bug a masterpiece of analysis and deduction. He obtained an appointment at West Point but was dismissed for gambling and neglect of his studies. In 1836 he married his 13 yr old cousin Virginia Clemm in Baltimore. As a magazine editor and publisher critic reviewer poet and storyteller he led an intenseful active life. There followed financial worry literary skirmishes with contemporaries among them Longfellow heavy drinking mental depression and physical hunger.
