SAN FRANCISCO: JOHN HENRY NASH. 1923. First Edition. Limited Edition. After 150 numbered copies without numeration reserved for distribution to friends of Mr. Clark for whom it was printed. Compliments of William Andrews Clark Jr. sticker present on front endpaper of the larger of the two volumes containing the text of Poe's book. Two volumes. One containing a reprint of the edition of 1843 4to. and the other a facsimile of the edition of 1827. 8to. At the rear blank of the larger volume comprising the reprint of the edition of 1843 is an evelope containing an extra label for the volume as well as a title label for the accompanying slipcase which is bound in card with a batik patterned overlay. Both volumes are near fine with the larger sans title label and chipped at edge. Previously mentioned reserve title label could be supplied The smaller with the 1827 facsimile has partial remnants of the original title label at spine and a trace of offsetting on rear cover from satin place marker. The slipcase is solid but with evidence of light chipping at edges. Though not even remotely so rare as the original volumes this exactingly produced limitation is quite uncommon. B . He obtained an appointment at West Point but was dismissed for gambling and neglect of his studies. In 1836 he married his 13 yr old cousin Virginia Clemm in Baltimore. As a magazine editor and publisher critic reviewer poet and storyteller he led an intenseful active life. There followed financial worry literary skirmishes with contemporaries among them Longfellow heavy drinking mental depression and physical hunger.
