Quarto size 67 pp. Edgar Allan Poe 1809-1849 gave the world a literary legacy that few can match - who amongst us has not read many of his stories such as "The Tell-Tale Heart" or poems such as "The Raven" with which this volume opens."Once upon a midnight dreary while I pondered weak and weary Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore.". This publication is by the Roycrofters founded by Elbert Hubbard 1856-1915 whose Press was closely modelled after William Morris' Kelmscott Press although the output was quite different. Known as "Fra Elbertus" by the Roycrofters Hubbard died in the sinking of the ship "Lusitania" in 1915 by a German submarine near the start of WWI. The influence of William Morris and his Arts and Crafts movement on Hubbard can be seen in the lovely decorative title page and the attention to detail in the page layout the binding and the quality of the paper used. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full light brown limp suede debossed rectangle on the front with gilt lettering yapped edges chocolate brown silk pastedown endpapers top edge gilt uncut fore- and bottom edges tissue-guarded frontispiece an illustration of Poe possibly based on the "Lewin Daguerreotype" of Poe but with an altered expression decorated title page with the drawing of a woman inset above the lettering perhaps meant to be Lenore a second portrait of Poe "From a picture in the collection of R.W. Poe Edgar Allan; Arakawa Artist
Eureka A Prose Poem; An Essay on the Material and Spiritual Universe
San Francisco: The Arion Press 1991. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Arakawa. No. 95 of 276 copies folio size 119 pp. signed by Arakawa. "Eureka" a substantial essay on the nature of the universe is a later work by Edgar Allan Poe 1809-1849 published a year before he died. Best known for his Gothic and Romantic short stories and poems especially "The Raven" and "The Fall of the House of Usher" Poe named this work a "prose poem" and he brings poetic sensibilities to his intuitive search for truth in the cosmos. The text has been interpreted numerous ways partly because Poe's seriousness in the essay has been questioned by some due for example to his jocular treatment of historical figures. Illustrating this Arion Press edition is Japanese artist and architect Arakawa 1936-2010 who takes excerpts of the text and overlays geometric symbols and patterns simultaneously clarifying and obfuscating meaning. ___DESCRIPTION: Full light brown cloth grey wraparound ruled borders orange and grey lettering on the both boards and spine fore- and bottom edges uncut photo-engravings based on drawings on mylar by Arakawa in grey and black throughout; Walbaum and handset Bodoni Book types Waterford paper folio size 13.75" by 10" pagination: i-ii iii-ix x 1-4 5-107 108 1 colophon one of 276 copies this number 95 signed by Arakawa on the colophon. The subscriber's invoice is fine clean and without wear. ___CITATION: Arion Press Catalogue no. 35. ___POSTAGE: Please note that this is an unusually large and heavy book therefore additional postage may apply; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Features The Raven The Bells City in the Sea To Helen et al. A collection of Poe's finest macabre poems. "The Raven" is a narrative poem first published in January 1845. Noted for its musicality stylized language and supernatural atmosphere. It tells of a talking raven's mysterious visit to a distraught lover tracing the man's creeping descent into madness. The lover often identified as being a student is lamenting the loss of his love Lenore. Sitting on a bust of Pallas the raven seems to further instigate his distress with its constant repetition of the word "Nevermore". The poem makes use of a number of folk and classical references. Poe claimed to have written the poem very logically and methodically intending to create a poem that would appeal to both critical and popular tastes as he explained in his 1846 follow-up essay "The Philosophy of Composition". The poem was inspired in part by a talking raven in the novel Barnaby Rudge: A Tale of the Riots of 'Eighty by Charles Dickens. Poe borrows the complex rhythm and meter of Elizabeth Barrett's poem "Lady Geraldine's Courtship" and makes use of internal rhyme as well as alliteration throughout. "The Raven" was first attributed to Poe in print in the New York Evening Mirror on January 29 1845. Its publication made Poe widely popular in his lifetime though it did not bring him financial success. Soon reprinted parodied and illustrated remaining one of the most famous poems ever written. Poe January 19 1809 - October 7 1849 was an American poet short-story writer editor and literary critic and is considered part of the American Romantic Movement. Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story and is considered the inventor of the detective-fiction genre. He is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone resulting in a financially difficult life and career. 4.5" x 7.5". 62 pages. Insured post. First Edition. Poe Edgar Allan
Three Poems of Edgar Allan Poe. Annabel Lee The Bells and The Raven
New York Toronto London: McGraw Hill Book Company 1966. Rare edition in striking dust wrapper. Illustrations and book design by Paul Galdone. Large 7.5" x 10.25" design. Grey full cloth boards black stamped portrait of Poe at front spine titles lt. shelf wear. Pages very good sharp; no writing. Surreal striking monochromatic imagery throughout; cast in hue of dark bluish green. Dk. sky patterned endps. Bind good moderate cant; hinges intact. Dj moderate edge wear toning; unclipped 3.00 protected in new clear sleeve. Classic striped design w/panel illustration from each tale in monochromatic blue-green and black with bold titles between. Printed in the USA. Edgar Allan Poe's hazy narrative begins on a night in December when "The Raven" haunts the unnamed narrator who sits reading "forgotten lore" to sublimate the loss of his love Lenore. A "rapping at his chamber door" reveals nothing yet excites his soul to "burning". A similar rapping slightly louder is heard at his window. When he investigates a raven enters his chamber. Paying no attention the raven perches atop a bust of Pallas high above the door. Amused by the raven's comically serious disposition the man asks that the bird tell him its name. The raven's only answer is "Nevermore". The narrator is surprised that the raven can talk though at this point it has said nothing further. The narrator remarks to himself that his "friend" will soon fly out of his life just as "other friends have flown before". The raven responds again with "Nevermore". The narrator reasons that the bird learned the word "Nevermore" from some "unhappy master" and that it is the only word it knows. Regardless the narrator pulls his chair directly in front of the raven determined to learn more. He thinks for a moment and his mind wanders to his lost Lenore. He thinks the air grows denser and feels the presence of angels and wonders if God is sending him a sign that he is to forget Lenore. The bird again replies in the negative suggesting that he can never be free of his memories. The narrator becomes angry calling the raven a "thing of evil". Finally he asks whether he will be reunited with Lenore in Heaven. When the raven responds with its typical "Nevermore" he is enraged and calling it a liar commands the bird to return to the "Plutonian shore" - but it does not move. The narrator's final admission is that his soul is trapped beneath the raven's shadow and shall be lifted "Nevermore". "The Bells" is a heavily onomatopoeic poem by which was not published until after Poe's death in 1849. Perhaps best known for the diacopic use of the word "bells." The poem has four parts to it; each growing darker and darker as the poem moves from "the jingling and the tinkling" to the "moaning and the groaning" of the bells. Insured post. First Edition Thus. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Illus. by Galdone Paul Illustration Book Design. 4to - over 9" - 12" tall. McGraw Hill Book Company Hardcover
