This collection of essays addresses some of the major transformations of millennial thought in America from the 1630s to the aftermath of the "great disappointment" of the 1840s. The focus will be on the complex interaction between the development of millennialist theories and their specific contexts. On the one hand the essays included in this volume will reveal how millennialist rhetoric was adapted to the specific needs of a constantly changing historical background. On the other hand the essays show how these transformations and revisionings of millennial thought contributed to the formation fo the socio-political situation of their time. While English eschatologists of the 16th and 17th centuries had claimed that America did not play a central role in God's providential design New England writers argued against the exclusion of America from the history of salvation. Eventually this gradual process of an 'Americanization' of eschatology led to an employment of millennialist discourse as a means of constructing a national identity. Millennialism underwent a further decisive change at the end of the 17th century when colonial Americans began to redefine the unfolding of the millennium as a communal endeavor in which the individual could play an active part. The image of God as "moral character" created by Great Awakening theologians responded to the need for a millennialist system which advocated social and political change. In post-revolutionary America a secularized millennialism then envisioned the nation's glorious future and added a civic eschatological dimension to many reformist social projects. Questo libro si interroga intorno ad alcuni luoghi fondamentali della tradizione filosofica, saggiando la possibilità di analizzarne le perduranti aporie e di scorgere lo spazio della loro nascosta provenienza. Come filo conduttore della ricerca, sono stati individuati i brevi ma densissimi scritti teoretici composti da Hölderlin nel corso della sua tormentata esperienza poetico-pensante e anzitutto il frammento giovanile conosciuto con il titolo di Urteil und Sein - "Giudizio ed Essere". Dai pensieri dell'ex allievo dello Stift di Tubinga emergono le questioni fondamentali su cui, in continuo confronto anzitutto con la tradizione platonica e neoplatonica, quasi ossessivamente insisteranno le molteplici voci dell'idealismo tedesco. E per questo che nei vari passaggi del libro - cercando di seguire l'andamento intrinseco del pensiero - vengono chiamati in causa il progetto fichtiano d'una dottrina della scienza, così come i primi tentativi teoretici compiuti dal giovane Schelling. Ma è al confronto con l'itinerario speculativo hegeliano che sono dedicate le pagine centrali del lavoro. La profonda radicalità della posizione hölderliniana non fu forse compresa da nessuno nel suo tempo, ed è ancora oggi capace di schiudere inattesi scenari interpretativi. Il suo senso appare ben condensato nell'espressione dell'Uno in se stesso diviso, al punto d'incrocio fra arte e pensiero. Tra gli scopi della ricerca emerge così anche la proposta di intrecciare le tensioni irrisolte che abitano lo spazio della filosofia all'esperienza poetica di Hölderlin, individuandone l'esito estremo nelle sue traduzioni e nella sua 'abissale' lettura del dramma tragico. Ernesto Forcellino ha perfezionato i suoi studi presso la Albert Ludwigs Universität di Freiburg im Breisgau conseguito il dottorato di ricerca a Napoli, presso la "Scuola Europea di Studi Avanzati'. Attualmente collabora con la cattedra di Filosofia Teoretica dell'Università degli Studi di Salerno. Si occupa in prevalenza della filosofia tedesca fra Ottocento e Novecento. Suoi saggi sono apparsi in vari volumi e riviste filosofiche. Quali sono le condizioni per ricostituire un luogo dove il soggetto possa dimorare al di fuori di ogni pretesa di fondazione ontologica? La filosofia viene convocata con la psicoanalisi per un ripensamento delle categorie fondative, a partire dall’assunto che la centralità del linguaggio non è segno individuante il genere umano e non lo esaurisce nella sua “fisionomia” di animal rationale, limitato in un’etica puramente valoriale oppure affondato nella solitudine di un’etica tragica. Al vettore del linguistico inteso come ciò che marca la discontinuità con “il resto dell’accadere universale” (Freud) non si tratta però di contrapporre 1′”altro dal linguistico”, come risulta, per certi versi, da alcune delle posizioni filosofiche discusse in questo libro. Occorre piuttosto riprendere a percorrere, sulla scorta del lavoro teorico di Sergio Finzi e di Virginia Finzi Ghisi, “la via lunga e discensionale delle forme”, attraverso cui il soggetto si costituisce coestensivamente al resto dell’accadere universale. Da quest’angolazione, il linguaggio non ha più la funzione di differenziare “l’uomo dall’animale” ma di esplicitare “i legami che intercorrono tra i due” (V. Finzi Ghisi), e diventa punto di arrivo “di un processo silenzioso di metamorfosi della luce e del colore” (S. Finzi). Attraverso questa via lunga e discensionale si dischiude, in virtù del fondamentale e inaugurale passo costitutivo di ogni soggettività che è l’invenzione del luogo della fobia, l’etica della verità del soggetto. Per la preminenza che in tale luogo ha la dimensione rappresentativa, quest’etica si configura come un’etica della rappresentazione. Riconosciuto ed elaborato con le sue “prime invenzioni” (teorie sessuali infantili e romanzo familiare) il proprio fondo psicotico (“l’espandersi disordinato del godimento paterno da cui si nasce”), il soggetto articola il proprio esserci in continuità con quel mondo delle forme da cui discende e ritrova, per questa via, il proprio posto nella grande politela della natura.
