Più tardi, prendono spazio Il profilo del "dotto" e l'idea del suo contributo all'avanzamento storico (Fichte), la proposta della possibile collaborazione con un potere democratico (Constant), I'idea della doppia anima del letterato e del poeta visto come uomo delle utopie (Hugo), oppure si torna all'idea e alla pratica di un combattivo impegno in difesa della verità e contro ogni pregiudizio (Zola, poi Rolland, poi Camus), si definisce il concetto di un "tradimento del chiericl" (Benda), si torna all'idea di un engagement (Sartre) facilmente contestabile come faziosa (Aron), oppure all'idea di un'indipendenza definibile come approccio al Divino e idoleggiamento del Bello (Du Bos) o come difesa della memoria dagli assalti del tempo Jaccottet). Dagli aspri conflitti ideologici del secolo scorso (ad esempio Vittorini/Togliatti o Pavese/De Martino) si è usciti grazie a proposte equilibrate e oggi più che mai condivisibili: universalismo, lotta per la giustizia e l'uguaglianza, difesa della libertà e del diritti individuali (Bobbio), sono oggi per tutti gli obiettivi primari, ineludibili e riconducibili, in fondo, agli imperativi dell'antica triade: liberté, égalité, fraternité.
