Copyright date circa 1900 This decorative antique French language volume is bound in brightly colored cloth and features ornate pictorial and arabesque colored and gilt inlay on the front cover and spine. The pastedowns are of textured patterned paper. One loose plate in the back of the book. This volume in the original French language features a frontispiece and numerous in text engraving illustrations and full-page colored illustrations from watercolors produced by Maison Puchot after Maurice Leloir. "Gil Blas.is a picaresque novel by Alain-Ren Lesage published between 1715 and 1735." "Gil Blas is related to Lesage's play Turcaret 1709. In both works Lesage uses witty valets in the service of thieving masters women of questionable morals cuckolded yet happy husbands gourmands ridiculous poets false savants and dangerously ignorant doctors to make his point. This antique volume shows very nicely for its age and considering the complexity of the cover design. It shows moderate signs of age and handling which include toning scuffs and scratches and very slight soiling and edgewear. The illustrations are in lovely shape. A small section at the rear of the page block is partially separated with one of the illustration plates fully separated but present. Paris - Antoine Augustin Renouard 1821 Book. GOOD ONLY. Hardcover. A scarce collection of work from French novelist and playwright Alain-Ren Lesage. In French. Volume one contains Le Diable Boiteux volume two contains thefirst part to Gil Blas volume three contains the second part of Gil Blas volume four holds Chevalier de Beauchene volume five contains Guzman D'Alfarache volume six holds Bachelier de Salamanque volume seven contains Estevanille Gonzalez volume eight containsRoland L'Amoureux with volume nine holding Don Quichotte volume ten contains the second part to Don Quichotte volume eleven contains a collection of Lesage's plays as does volume twelve. Lesage is best known for his comic novel Le Diable boiteux his comedy Turcaret and his picaresque novel Gil Blas which are all present within this collection. Lesage began by translating plays chiefly from Francisco de Rojas Zorrilla and Lope de Vega. Le Tratre puni and Le Point d'honneur from the former and Don Flix de Mendoce from the latter were acted or published in the first two or three years of the 18th century. In 1704 he translated the continuation of Don Quixote by Alonso Fernndez de Avellaneda and soon afterwards adapted a play from Pedro Caldern de la Barca Don Csar Ursin which was successful at court and damned in the city. Lesage was however nearly forty before he obtained decided success. In 1707 his farce Crispin rival de son matre was well received and Le Diable boiteux was published and ran to several editions. Lesage altered and improved this play in 1725 giving it its present form. He thereupon altered it into Turcaret considered his theatrical masterpiece. Edited by Pierre Hyacinthe Audiffret. Externally all volumes are rubbed with wear and some slight loss to some of the spines and extremities. Loss to seven of the spine labels. One front board is detached onefront joint is crackedand one front hinge is slightly strained. Internally all volumes are firmly bound and bright throughout there are however instances of foxing throughout whichare heavier to the first and last pages. Edinburgh - William Paterson 1886 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An attractive ilustratedset of The Adventures of Gil Blas of Santillana. Complete in three volumes. These volumes are number three of a limited print run of one hundred and twenty-five copies. Translated from the original French by Henri Van Laun. Gil Blas French: L'Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane is a picaresque novel by Alain-Ren Lesage published between 1715 and 1735. It is considered to be the last masterpiece of the picaresque genre. Gil Blas is born in misery to a stablehand and a chambermaid of Santillana in Cantabria and is educated by his uncle. He leaves Oviedo at the age of seventeen to attend the University of Salamanca. His bright future is suddenly interrupted when he is forced to help robbers along the route and is faced with jail. He becomes a valet and over the course of several years is able to observe many different classes of society both lay and clerical. Because of his occupation he meets many disreputable people and is able to adjust to many situations thanks to his adaptability and quick wit. He finally finds himself at the court as a favourite of the king and secretary to the prime minister. Working his way up though hard work and intelligence Gil is able to retire to a castle to enjoy a fortune and a hard-earned honest life. Gil Blas is related to Lesage's play Turcaret 1709. In both works Lesage uses witty valets in the service of thieving masters women of questionable morals cuckolded yet happy husbands gourmands ridiculous poets false savants and dangerously ignorant doctors to make his point. Each class and each occupation becomes an archetype. This work is both universal and French within a Spanish context. However its originality was questioned. Voltaire was among the first to point out similarities between Gil Blas and Marcos de Obregn by Vicente Espinel from which Lesage had borrowed several details. Considering Gil Blas is essentially Spanish Jos Francisco de Isla claimed to translate the work from French into Spanish in order to return it to its natural state. Juan Antonio Llorente suggested that Gil Blas was written by the historian Antonio de Sols y Ribadeneyra by arguing that no contemporary writer could have possibly written a work of such detail and accuracy. Condition: In red cloth bindings with gilt embellishment on the front boards and gilt lettering to the spines. Externally smart with slight rubbing. Spinesare slightly cocked and sunned. Corners are bumped. Internally generally firmly bound though binding is loosening in places. Hinges are slightly tender. Pages are generally bright and clean with some scattered foxing. End-papers in all volumes are browned with off-setting from frontispieces and engravings throughout volumes. Overall: VERY GOOD. Edinburgh - William Paterson hardcover
