Paris - Antoine Augustin Renouard 1821 Book. GOOD ONLY. Hardcover. A scarce collection of work from French novelist and playwright Alain-Ren Lesage. In French. Volume one contains Le Diable Boiteux volume two contains thefirst part to Gil Blas volume three contains the second part of Gil Blas volume four holds Chevalier de Beauchene volume five contains Guzman D'Alfarache volume six holds Bachelier de Salamanque volume seven contains Estevanille Gonzalez volume eight containsRoland L'Amoureux with volume nine holding Don Quichotte volume ten contains the second part to Don Quichotte volume eleven contains a collection of Lesage's plays as does volume twelve. Lesage is best known for his comic novel Le Diable boiteux his comedy Turcaret and his picaresque novel Gil Blas which are all present within this collection. Lesage began by translating plays chiefly from Francisco de Rojas Zorrilla and Lope de Vega. Le Tratre puni and Le Point d'honneur from the former and Don Flix de Mendoce from the latter were acted or published in the first two or three years of the 18th century. In 1704 he translated the continuation of Don Quixote by Alonso Fernndez de Avellaneda and soon afterwards adapted a play from Pedro Caldern de la Barca Don Csar Ursin which was successful at court and damned in the city. Lesage was however nearly forty before he obtained decided success. In 1707 his farce Crispin rival de son matre was well received and Le Diable boiteux was published and ran to several editions. Lesage altered and improved this play in 1725 giving it its present form. He thereupon altered it into Turcaret considered his theatrical masterpiece. Edited by Pierre Hyacinthe Audiffret. Whitehead's private library bookplates to the front pastedown of every volume. Complete in twelve volumes. Condition: All volumes bound in half calf with marbled boards. Externally all volumes are rubbed with wear and some slight loss to some of the spines and extremities. Loss to seven of the spine labels. One front board is detached onefront joint is crackedand one front hinge is slightly strained. Internally all volumes are firmly bound and bright throughout there are however instances of foxing throughout whichare heavier to the first and last pages.
