Recueil de Planches: Agriculture et Economie Rustique Rural and Peasant Life and Industry in 18th Century France for the Engravings from Denis Diderot and Jean Baptiste Le Rond d'Alembert: Encyclopdie ou dictionnaire raisonn des sciences des arts et des mtiers. First edition
Paris: Chez Briasson David & Le Breton 1762-1767. 395 x 255 mm. with 18 pages of letterpress descriptions Rustic economy. Rustic economy is the art of knowing the useful and profitable products of the countryside appropriating and conserving them and drawing the greatest possible advantage from them. This method of enriching oneself has unlimited scope: it is a tax imposed on all matter even on the elements. A simple exposition of the subjects embraced by the term 'rustic economy' would be a considerable undertaking. 1 These are the primary ones: whoever wishes to live in the countryside and profit from his stay there should know the arts of agriculture and gardening in the finest detail. He should be ignorant of nothing which pertains to the buildings he requires for himself and his family servants animals and various crops; hunting fishing and falconry; stud farms water and forests; rustic work and the manufacture of a variety of products such as stoneware pottery lime brick iron etc. Although a man who devotes himself entirely to such pursuits is scorned by the common man these activities are all in accordance with nature sound health the broadening of useful knowledge the elevation of the mind a simple life a taste for good things virtue the commonweal integrity and good sense. For those subjects which pertain to rustic economy consult sections of this dictionary and articles: Hunting Fishing Agriculture Pheasantry Falconry Gardening Soil cultivation etc. Paris: Chez Briasson, David & Le Breton, 1762-1767 unknown

DIDEROT Denis. D'ALEMBERT Denis
Select essays from the encyclopedy being the most curious entertaining and instructive parts of that very extensive work written by Mallet Diderot D'Alembert and Others the Most Celebrated Writers of the Age
London: Printed for Samuel Leacroft 1772. 4 iv 2 372pp. With half-title. Nineteenth-century maroon roan gilt titled to upper board. Marbled endpapers with the later book-label of 'Iain J.A.S. Woolley' to FEP pencilled inscription of the same owner to blank fly-leaf. Slightly rubbed a little chipped to joints at head of spine. Marginal paper flaw to F1. Barring the abortive attempt to translate the entire French L'Encyclopedie into English only the first fragment of which appeared as The plan of the French Encyclopaedia London 1752 this is the first significant appearance in English of the ground-breaking reference work of the enlightenment. Appearing in the same year as the final folio of the French edition it was apparently little noticed on publication. Only The London magazine appears to have provided a contemporary review and it was far from complimentary: 'A collection of letters on various subjects by some of the most eminent literati that have lately appeared in France.the translation is lame the spirit and elegance of the original is totally evaporated'. Included in this selection are seven essays ascribed to Mallet three to D'Alembert including 'Des Cartes' Philosophy' two to Diderot including 'Cards' 'Conjugal Infidelity' by Toussaint and a further nine pieces as varied as the 64pp 'On Libraries' 'On the Canadians' and 'Ante-Diluvian Philosophy' either unsigned or indicated as collaborations. Although institutionally relatively well catered for with a few notable exceptions this book is nonetheless uncommon in commerce with no copies recorded in auction records of the recent decades. Diderot Denis and Jean Baptiste le Rond d'Alembert. Robert Benard engraver
Statues Equestres. Sculpture Fonte des Statues Equestres Contenant Six Planches equivalentes a douze a cause de quatre doubles & d'une triple Casting of equestrian sculptures
Paris 1771. First Edition. Buckram cloth folio folder. . Near Fine. Folio 38.5 by 25 cm with two double plates 50 cm wide and the triple plate 68 cm wide. The six plates show the steps in the casting of massive equestrian statues one of the staples of public monuments before the twentieth century. As the rule with the plates in the Diderot and d'Alembert Encylcopedie though the plates are handsome works of art transcending their pedagogic purpose and the images here have an element of the curious and novel that separates them from more traditional equestrian artwork. The plates and their two page textual description that precedes them were carefully removed from the larger volume and remain attached to each other like a thinner brochure. Other than occasional light and insignificant soiling and minor age toning the plates are clean and fresh. The folder made to house them is of a modern buckram cloth decidedly utilitarian in appearance but not unattractive with their multi-color ribbon ties.

hardcover
