In D'Alemberts paper the WAVE-EQUATION appeared for the first time in print and thus he was the first person to solve the mathematical equation for a vibrating string and in the same connection it was the first success with partial differential equations. This paper opened the series of papers which are offered here. The three authors came to different conclusions on the nature of an "arbitrary" function and its expansion in trigonometric functions a controversy brought to a conclusion only in the 19th century by Fourier Cauchy Dirichlet and Riemann. <br>"Nowadays this is the starting point for SUPERSTRINGS which some people call "THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING". D'Alembert could not have guessed the importance his discovery would one day have. He was interested in strings because he was interested in music. He was a friend of the composer Rameau and once wrote a book explaining Rameau's theory of harmony. So his broad interest in both the arts and sciences led D'Alembert to an important insight. Perhaps the entire universe is made of vibrating strings obeying an equation D'Alembert was first alerted to by the sound of a harpiscord." Andrew Crumey.<br><br>The wave equation is an important partial differential equation that describes the propagation of a variety of waves such as sound waves light waves and water waves. It arises in such fields as acoustics electromagnetics and fluid dynamics.<br>D'Alembert thought that he had given the general solution of the problem but Euler pointed out that there is no physical reason to require that the initial position of the string is given by a single function - D'Alembert had operated with this arbitrary function the initial condition and one other arbitrary function the one that gives the shape of the travelling wave - different parts of the string could very well be described by different formulas as long as they fitted together smoothly. Moreover the travelling wave solution could be extended to his situation. The point is that for Euler and D'Alembert every function had a graph represented a single function. Euler argued that any graph - even if not given by a function - should be admitted as a possible initial position of the string. D'Alembert did not accept Euler's physical reasoning Euler's first paper here offered. In 1755 Daniel Bernoulli joined the argument with his paper Bernoulli's first paper offered here. He found another form of solution for the vibrating string using "standard waves". A standing wave is a motion of the string in which there are fixed "nodes" which are stationary; between the nodes each segment of the string moves up and down in unison. The "principal mode" is the one without nodes the "second harmonic" is the name given to the motion with a single node at the mid-point. The "third harmonic" has two equally spaced-nodes and so on - each "harmonic" thus corresponds to a pure tone of music. <br>"Just as D'Alembert had rejected Euler's reasoning now Euler rejected Bernoulli's. First of all as Bernoulli acknowledged Euler himself had already found the standing wave solution in one special case. Euler's objection was to claim that the standing-wave solution was general - applicable to all motions of the string" Davis & Hersh. D'Alembert also attacked Bernoulli's solution see his article in the Encyclopedie.<br>Euler's method was more useful than D'Alemberts but as it turned out Bernoulli was closer to the truth. The later use by Fourier of sines and cosines on heat flow was very similar to Bernoulli's method of studying the vibrations. "The debate about the Vibrating Strings raged throughout the 1760s and 1770s. Even Laplace entered the fray in 1779 and sided with d'Alembert. D'Alembert continued in a series of booklets entitled Opuscules which began to appear in 1768". Morris Kline. hardcover

D'ALEMBERT Jean Le Rond. RAMEAU Jean Phillipe:
Elemens de Musique Theorique et Pratique. Suviant Les Principes de M. Rameau. claris Dvelopps et Simplifis Par M. D'Alembernt de l'Academie Francoise. Nouvelle Edition. Revue corrige & considrablement augmente
A Lyon Chez Jean-Marie Bruyset. 1766. 8vo 207 x 130 mms. pp. iv xxxvi 236 237 - 240 Approbation and Privilege including half-title ten folding engraved plates at end title-page in red and black fore-edges uncut recent rebound in half calf gilt spine marbled boards. A very good copy. D'Alembert's first exposure to music theory was in 1749 when he was called upon to review a Mmoire submitted to the Acadmie by Jean-Philippe Rameau. This article written in conjunction with Diderot would later form the basis of Rameau's 1750 treatise Dmonstration du principe de l'harmonie. D'Alembert wrote a glowing review praising the author's deductive character as an ideal scientific model. He saw in Rameau's music theories support for his own scientific ideas a fully systematic method with a strongly deductive synthetic structure. Two years later in 1752 d'Alembert attempted a fully comprehensive survey of Rameau's works in his Elments de musique thorique et pratique suivant les principes de M. Rameau. Emphasizing Rameau's main claim that music was a mathematical science that had a single principle from which could be deduced all the elements and rules of musical practice as well as the explicit Cartesian methodology employed d'Alembert helped to popularize the work of the composer and advertise his own theories. He claims to have "clarified developed and simplified" the principles of Rameau arguing that the single idea of the corps sonore was not sufficient to derive the entirety of music. D'Alembert instead claimed that three principles would be necessary to generate the major musical mode the minor mode and the identity of octaves. Because he was not a musician however d'Alembert misconstrued the finer points of Rameau's thinking changing and removing concepts that would not fit neatly into his understanding of music. LETTERS OF MLLE. DE LESPINASSE WITH NOTES ON HER LIFE AND CHARACTER
Boston Hardy Pratt & Company 1901 first edition red cloth with paper title on spine VG condition light wear and mild sun darkening to spine blue check mark on front free end paper 6 x 9 342 pages a few illustrations. # 578 of 800 numbered sets this volume alone from a 12 volume series of books on French authors this volume complete in itself Versailles edition ---------------------Jeanne Julie lonore de Lespinasse 9 November 1732 23 May 1776 owned a prominent salon in France. Establishment of her own SaloneditMlle de Lespinasse then set up a salon of her own which was joined by many of the most brilliant members of Madame du Deffand's circle. Jean le Rond d'Alembert was one of the most assiduous of her friends and eventually came to live in her house. This arrangement ensured d'Alembert's comfort and lent influence to Mlle de Lespinasse's salon. Although she had neither beauty nor rank her ability as a hostess made her get-togethers the most popular in Paris. She owes her distinction however not to her social success but to circumstances which remained a secret during her lifetime even from her closest friends. Two volumes of Lettres published in 1809 displayed her as the victim of a passion of a rare intensity. In virtue of this ardent intense quality Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve and other of her critics place her letters in the limited category to which belong the Latin letters of Hloise and the Letters of a Portuguese Nun. Relationship with the Marquis de MoraeditHer first passion a reasonable and serious one was for the Marquis de Mora son of the Spanish ambassador in Paris. She first met him about two years after establishing her salon and then met him again when he returned to Paris two years later. Julie fell in love with the wealthy and handsome Marquis and he returned her feelings. He began to suffer symptoms of consumption however and returned to Spain because of his ill health. Mora's illness and the separation caused Julie much pain and anxiety although soon after his departure she became acquainted with the man who would be the main passion of her life the Comte de Guibert. On the way to Paris in 1774 to fulfill promises exchanged with Mlle de Lespinasse Mora died at Bordeaux. Relationship with the Comte du GuiberteditJulie's letters to the Comte de Guibert the undeserving object of her fatal infatuation begin from 1773. From the struggle between her affection for Mora and her blind passion for her new lover the letters go on to describe her partial disenchantment on Guibert's marriage and her final despair. hardcover

D'ALEMBERT Jean Baptiste le Rond.
Portrait by Ernst Hader pinxit photographed by Sophus Williams.
Berlin Phot.u. Verlag Sophus Williams 1881. Original photograph carte de visite albumen print 107 x 68 cm with his in reproduction printed signature. Jean-Baptiste le Rond d'Alembert 16 November 1717 - 29 October 1783 was a French mathematician mechanician physicist and philosopher. He was also co-editor with Denis Diderot of the Encyclopdie. D'Alembert's method for the wave equation is named after him. - Born in Paris d'Alembert was the illegitimate child of the writer Claudine Gurin de Tencin and the chevalier Louis-Camus Destouches an artillery officer. Destouches was abroad at the time of d'Alembert's birth and a couple of days after birth his mother left him on the steps of the Saint-Jean-le-Rond de Paris church. According to custom he was named after the patron saint of the church. D'Alembert was placed in an orphanage for found children but was soon adopted by the wife of a glazier. Destouches secretly paid for the education of Jean le Rond but did not want his paternity officially recognised. - D'Alembert first attended a private school. The chevalier Destouches left d'Alembert an annuity of 1200 livres on his death in 1726. Under the influence of the Destouches family at the age of twelve D'Alembert entered the Jansenist Collge des Quatre-Nations the institution was also known under the name "Collge Mazarin". Here he studied philosophy law and the arts graduating as bachelier in 1735. In his later life D'Alembert scorned the Cartesian principles he had been taught by the Jansenists: "physical promotion innate ideas and the vortices". - The Jansenists steered D'Alembert toward an ecclesiastical career attempting to deter him from pursuits such as poetry and mathematics. Theology was however "rather unsubstantial fodder" for d'Alembert. He entered law school for two years and was nominated avocat in 1738. - He was also interested in medicine and mathematics. Jean was first registered under the name Daremberg but later changed it to d'Alembert. The name "d'Alembert" was proposed by Johann Heinrich Lambert for a suspected but non-existent moon of Venus.citation needed - In July 1739 he made his first contribution to the field of mathematics pointing out the errors he had detected in L'analyse dmontre published 1708 by Charles Ren Reynaud in a communication addressed to the Acadmie des Sciences. At the time L'analyse dmontre was a standard work which d'Alembert himself had used to study the foundations of mathematics. D'Alembert was also a Latin scholar of some note and worked in the latter part of his life on a superb translation of Tacitus from which he received wide praise including that of Denis Diderot. In 1740 he submitted his second scientific work from the field of fluid mechanics Mmoire sur la rfraction des corps solides which was recognized by Clairaut. In this work d'Alembert theoretically explained refraction. In 1741 after several failed attempts d'Alembert was elected into the Acadmie des Sciences. He was later elected to the Berlin Academy in 1746. In 1743 he published his most famous work Trait de dynamique in which he developed his own laws of motion. - When the Encyclopdie was organized in the late 1740s d'Alembert was engaged as co-editor for mathematics and science with Diderot and served until a series of crises temporarily interrupted the publication in 1757. He authored over a thousand articles for it including the famous Preliminary Discourse. D'Alembert "abandoned the foundation of Materialism" when he "doubted whether there exists outside us anything corresponding to what we suppose we see." In this way D'Alembert agreed with the Idealist Berkeley and anticipated the Transcendental idealism of Kant. In 1752 he wrote about what is now called D'Alembert's paradox: that the drag on a body immersed in an inviscid incompressible fluid is zero. In 1754 d'Alembert was elected a member of the Acadmie franaise of which he became Permanent Secretary on 9 April 1772. - D'Alembert was a participant in several Parisian salons particularly those of Marie Thrse Rodet Geoffrin of the marquise du Deffand and of Julie de Lespinasse. d'Alembert became infatuated with Mlle de Lespinasse and eventually took up residence with her. - He suffered bad health for many years and his death was as the result of a bladder illness. As a known unbeliever D'Alembert was buried in a common unmarked grave. - In France the fundamental theorem of algebra is known as the d'Alembert/Gauss theorem an error in d'Alembert's proof was caught by Gauss. He also created his ratio test a test to see if a series converges. The D'Alembertian operator which first arose in D'Alembert's analysis of vibrating strings plays an important role in modern theoretical physics. While he made great strides in mathematics and physics d'Alembert is also famously known for incorrectly arguing in Croix ou Pile that the probability of a coin landing heads increased for every time that it came up tails. In gambling the strategy of decreasing one's bet the more one wins and increasing one's bet the more one loses is therefore called the D'Alembert system a type of martingale. - Diderot portrayed "Le rve de D'Alembert" "D'Alembert's Dream" written after the two men became estranged. It depicts D'Alembert ill in bed conducting a debate on materialist philosophy in his sleep. - The Andrew Crumey novel "D'Alembert's Principle" 1996 takes its title from D'Alembert's principle in physics. Its first part describes D'Alembert's life and his infatuation with Julie de Lespinasse. Wikipedia. KEYWORDS:france/photo unknown
