The section on woodworking in buildings from the Encyclop�die of Diderot and d'Alembert published initially in Paris between 1751 and 1772. This section folio 260x365mm is well bound for protection in 20th century brown thin card covers finished on the spine in green hessian or similar cloth; tiny worm hole in the extreme lower left margins of the first three or four leaves and with the usual slight browning around the margins but a very good complete copy with clear crisp text on 16 numbered pages and 38 full page copper engraved plates numbered I - XXIV but several with subnumbered plates in the particular subseries. The Encyclop�die the magnificent Enlightenment undertaking with the grand aim of publishing all the world's knowledge and intended to "change the way people think" appeared between 1751 and 1772 in 28 folio volumes with over 70000 articles and more than 3000 illustrations later supplemented with additional material and revised elements. It was the first general encyclopedia to include material on technology and on crafts entirely appropriately as the underlying focus of the work was on human reason rather than on theology or nature and because the editors wished to provide information applicable to people's everyday lives. There is no separate section title page and it's unclear exactly when this part was published but judging by the quality of the engravings it's most likely from the original edition or at least from a very early printing. The text consists of descriptions of the 38 plates written by the architect Jacques-Raymond Lucotte who also drew the material for the plates which were then engraved by Robert B�nard. Lucotte was responsible for a dozen craft articles which appeared in volumes IX to XVII and for over 650 illustrations in the Encylop�die. B�nard in turn was a major contributor to the Encyclop�die engraving something over 1800 plates. This is a very good desirable copy of a self-contained part of arguably the greatest and most ambitious publishing undertaking of the Enlightenment. <br/> <br/> paperback‎

‎Nouvelle édition parue dans les Oeuvres complètesqui comprenaient un troisième volume, contenant Les Lettres persanes et Le Temple de Gnide. Notre exemplaire, relié à l'époque et présentant des pièces de titre spécifiant "L'Esprit des Loix", montre que ces volumes étaient vendus séparément. Le premier volume contient L'Eloge et analyse de l'Esprit des loix par D'Alembert. Deux cartes dépliantes gravées sur cuivre hors texte et vignette gravée sur cuivre par Le Mire d'après De Sève à l'effigie de Montesquieu lors de sa réception à l'académie française au premier tome. Reliures de l'époque en plein veau marbré, dos lisses ornés, pièces de titre et de tomaisons de maroquin rouge et havane, gardes et contreplats de papier à la coquille, toutes tranches marbrées. Coiffe de tête du premier tome absente, coiffe du second restaurée, ainsi que les coiffes de queues et les mors des deux volumes. Rousseurs claires et éparses. Quelques notes marginales de l'époque au premier tome. Livre emblématique et phare du XVIIIèmesiècle, L'Esprit des lois, c'est-à-dire les principes et les tendances par lesquels se font les lois, aura une influence déterminante sur la vie politique, et sera un guide pour la rédaction de la Constitution de 1791 et de celle des États-Unis. La thèse générale de Montesquieu (1689- 1755), c'est que les lois ne sont pas seulement une création des hommes - l'esprit des lois c'est« les divers rapports des lois avec diverses choses» - mais que les causes qui les forment sont multiples; il y a donc des causes physiques (le climat), et des causes morales (religion, murs...).De plus, une justice primitive est à l'origine des lois; il y a donc bien un esprit des lois.
