Quarter-bound in the orginal contemporary binding with a beige cloth spine and paper covered boards. No Titling to the spine or boards. Probably had a paper label - now missing. All covers are a little marked/grubby and there is a 2" narrow split in the top inner edge to the cloth of the spine - but all hinges tight and sound - it's just the cloth that has split. The corners edges and head/tail of the spine are bumped with a little scraping to the corners but generally sound tight and complete. Plain Endpapers with traces of a bookplate having been removed from the front pastedown. No Inscriptions but a brown mark O.25 cm at it's widest by 2.00 cm long affecting the blank edge and fore edge of the last 20pp and the Index - possibly old dried-brown ink Most pages uncut. Aristotle's rhetoric tries to strike a middle position. Aristotle says rhetoric and poetry are a technique the Rhetoric is a handbook. Aristotle says the speaker needs to appeal to appropriate information for the particular setting. Much like a lawyer's argument not just relying on facts need to appeal to people's emotions. Aristotle does understand that rhetoric can be used in a harmful way. Aristotle lays out three features in rhetoric: 1. Ethos= character of the speaker also charisma speaker earns the audience's trust use of body language. 2. Pathos= condition of the hearer. 3. Logos= essential bearing on political persuasion truth. Plato's concern by definition therefore excludes speech because it deals with emotion. These three conditions must be in play for a speech to be successful. First edition in English of Aristotle's' enormously influential work on government the only edition in the English language published during the 18th century. Quarto bound in full contemporary calf with elaborate gilt tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands morocco spine label lettered in gilt gilt turn-ins. In good condition. A scarce and important work a copy of which was owned by Thomas Jefferson and influenced the drafting of the American Declaration of Independence. An important text in both the history of philosophy and in sparking the development of western political democracy. Ellis' translation was the first direct into English from the original Greek of Aristotle's "Politics." Loys Le Roy translated this work into French which was subsequently translated into English in 1597. Ellis' translation is considered more accurate and for many the most important translation in bringing Aristotle's treatise to enlightenment statesmen and philosophers. The bibliographer Lowdnes notes that Ellis' work appeared in this quarto edition 1776 priced at 15 shillings and was reprinted with little change in 1778. Lowndes praises Ellis' edition as "A faithful and perspicuous version." Aristotle's On Government via this English translation became a landmark text in the history of Western political thought a text which influenced late 18th and 19th century political thought in the English speaking world. Dr. B. E. Bryant notes that Thomas Jefferson owned a copy of the Ellis translation which influenced his drafting of the American Declaration of Independence: "Like most other well-educated individuals of his day Jefferson was thoroughly exposed to classical philosophy. We know for certain he owned a copy of the William Ellis 1776 translation of Aristotle's Politics and even cited Aristotle as one of the sources he used for the Declaration of Independence." Aristotle's "On Government" constitutes the first treatise of the conditions under which philosophy is possible within politics and thus the work that as much as any other founded political philosophy. The influence that this work has had on later political thinking is difficult to exaggerate and the fact that the work became available in a translation into English directly from the original Greek has been of the utmost importance to the development of political thought in England and America. Rare 16th century French printing of Aristotle's pioneering work on zoology which had a powerful influence on zoology for over two thousand years. Octavo bound in full polished calf engraved title pages. Rebacked. In very good condition. Written in the fourth century B.C.E. Aristotle's History of Animals had a powerful influence on zoology for some two thousand years. Generally seen as a pioneering work of zoology Aristotle frames his text by explaining that he is investigating the what the existing facts about animals prior to establishing the why the causes of these characteristics. The book is thus an attempt to apply philosophy to part of the natural world. Throughout the work Aristotle seeks to identify differences both between individuals and between groups. The work contains many accurate eye-witness observations in particular of the marine biology around the island of Lesbos such as that the octopus had color-changing abilities and a sperm-transferring tentacle that the young of a dogfish grow inside their mother's body and that the male river catfish guards the eggs after the female has left. Some of these were long considered fanciful before being rediscovered in the nineteenth century. It continued to be a primary source of knowledge until in the sixteenth century zoologists including Conrad Gessner all influenced by Aristotle wrote their own studies of the subject.
