Z. in Stageira, einem der zahlreichen, über den ganzen ägäischen Raum verteilten griechischen Stadtstaaten, ging Aristoteles später hach Athen und formte seine Persönlichkeit in der für die Entwicklung eines kritischen Bewußtseins so fruchtbaren Atmosphäre der Platonischen Akademie. An dieser Stätte lebendigen Meinungsstreites hat er 20 Jahre gelernt, geforscht und gelehrt. Dann, 347 v. u. Z., zwangen ihn politische Umstände, in anderen Stadtstaaten die wissenschaftliche Arbeit fortzusetzen. Zugleich war er auch als Erzieher für den künftigen Alexander den Großen tätig. 335 v. u. Z. nach Athen zurückgekehrt gründete er eine eigene Akademie, das Lykeion. Nach 12 Jahren ging er erneut ins Exil.
