16 1045 43 p. 8vo 8 A-3Y8 190 x 122 mm ¶ The first version of this iconic printer's device put to paper and among its earliest appearances. The solitaire device had debuted just the previous year and had been used in fewer than a dozen books when this Aristotle was issued. The device was eventually used in well over 400 Elzevir editions and was recut multiple times see Berghman "Marques Typographiques" #2-5 the present original not pictured. "This mark was the principal one of the Leyden office and was in constant use from 1620 to 1712 long after the Elzevirs had ceased to print" Roberts. Indeed the device remains in use today as the logo of academic publisher Elsevier. Isaac Elzevir who worked in the family business from 1617-1625 introduced the device and was the first of the family to undertake the printing of their own publications. ¶ First and only Elzevir edition of Aristotle's <i>Politics</i> and the first edition of the Politics to include Heinsius's summaries. Includes fragments from Heraclides Ponticus and the <i>De moribus gentium</i> of Nicolaus of Damascus. All texts include Greek and Latin in parallel columns. Factotum initials. --- PROVENANCE: With ownership inscriptions spanning two and a half centuries: "Solvi 18 gl. Jun mens. 1700 GL Helmold" likely Georg Ludwig Helmold whose library was auctioned at Hannover in 1744; J.A.E. Erlmann dated 11 June 1781 possibly being the signature of one Johann August Erlmann enrolled at Zwickau Gymnasium in 1753; an unidentified inscription from 1841; Alfred Barrett dated 1845 on title page; and David Lattimore dated 1952 former Professor of Linguistics at Brown University. Some underlining and penciled annotations the penciled markings likely those of Lattimore. --- CONDITION: Contemporary vellum over boards; yapp edges; residue on spine from old label. ¶ Minor splitting at joint ends. Quarter-bound in the orginal contemporary binding with a beige cloth spine and paper covered boards. No Titling to the spine or boards. Probably had a paper label - now missing. All covers are a little marked/grubby and there is a 2" narrow split in the top inner edge to the cloth of the spine - but all hinges tight and sound - it's just the cloth that has split. The corners edges and head/tail of the spine are bumped with a little scraping to the corners but generally sound tight and complete. Plain Endpapers with traces of a bookplate having been removed from the front pastedown. No Inscriptions but a brown mark O.25 cm at it's widest by 2.00 cm long affecting the blank edge and fore edge of the last 20pp and the Index - possibly old dried-brown ink Most pages uncut. Rough edged pages with some light foxing spots. Internally a few pages browned some foxing creasing and light thumbing but generally the text is white and very clean. 476 pp 11 pp Index. Overall considering the book is 200 years old this is a Very Clean Tight and Bright copy. "Aristotle's Rhetoric and Poetics are an alternative to Plato. Aristotle's rhetoric tries to strike a middle position. Aristotle says rhetoric and poetry are a technique the Rhetoric is a handbook. Aristotle says the speaker needs to appeal to appropriate information for the particular setting. Much like a lawyer's argument not just relying on facts need to appeal to people's emotions. Aristotle does understand that rhetoric can be used in a harmful way. Aristotle lays out three features in rhetoric: 1. Ethos= character of the speaker also charisma speaker earns the audience's trust use of body language. 2. Pathos= condition of the hearer. 3. Logos= essential bearing on political persuasion truth. Plato's concern by definition therefore excludes speech because it deals with emotion. These three conditions must be in play for a speech to be successful. The rhetoric contains a detailed analysis of the different human emotions and how to elicit them in a speech. STC. all�Adams e al Cranz �Bibliography of Aristotele Editions�. Curiosamente per errore la data al frontis si legge 15560 anzich� 1560 come � chiaramente in fine. Antica firma d�appartenza al frontis. Quaderno C lievemente arrossato alcune note manoscritte dell�epoca ai margini altrimenti esemplare bello fresco e genuino. Bellissimo frontis architettonico con putti e figure emblematiche a lato che sorreggono il cartiglio col titolo. Capolettera figurati carattere corsivo e rotondo minuto ed elegante. Dedica a Cosimo d� Medici. Seconda edizione tradotta dal Segni simile all' edizione di Crusca del 1549. " Questo libro � quasi tutto corretto forse di mano dello stesso autore per farne una nuova ristampa" Paitoni. Piuttosto raro manca all' Adams Poggiali e Razzolini. Lieve alone alle ultime carte ma bell' esemplare fresco e nitido. Piccolo vecchio restauro ad un angolo della legatura e ad un forellino al dorso dorature in parte sbiadite.
