‎Keaney, John J.‎

‎THE COMPOSITION OF ARISTOTLE'S ATHENAION POLITEIA Observation and Explanation‎

‎Book is fine. DJ has light shelfwear. ; Xii, 191pp. Discovered one hundred years ago, Aristotle's Athenaion Politeia is invaluable to contemporary understanding of Athenian democracy. As a historical record, however, it has been found to be so unreliable that some have questioned its true authorship, and it has remained largely ignored by those studying philosophy and literature. Keaney uses a literary approach to reassert Aristotle's authorship and to present the Athenaion Politeia as a document that defies the constraints of any particular genre--probably never intended to be a piece of historical writing. He goes beyond the traditional approach of historical analysis to consider the work as characteristic of a new and innovative genre created by Aristotle, that of empirically-based cultural history. ; 191 pages‎

‎THEOPHRASTUS: THE CHARACTER SKETCHES Translated, with Notes and Introductory Essays‎

‎Light shelfwear to book. DJ has a bit of soiling to front panel and some chipping to edges. DJ spine a bit sunned. ; Theophrastus' The Characters consists of brief, vigorous and trenchant delineations of moral types, which contain a most valuable picture of the life of his time. They form the first recorded attempt at systematic character writing. The book has been regarded by some as an independent work; others incline to the view that the sketches were written from time to time by Theophrastus, and collected and edited after his death; others, again, regard the Characters as part of a larger systematic work, but the style of the book is against this. Theophrastus has found many imitators in this kind of writing, notably Hall (1608) , Sir Thomas Overbury (1614–16) , Bishop Earle (1628) and Jean de La Bruyère (1688) , who also translated the Characters. ; 153 pages‎
