Published in only seven volumes in thirty-four years between 1710 and 1744 the Miscellanea Berolinensia ad incrementum scientiarum was the primary journal of the Royal Prussian Society of Sciences founded on 11 July 1700 in Berlin by the Elector and Margrave of Brandenburg Friedrich III. One day later Leibniz was appointed as the first president of the Society. In a 'Pro Memoria' he wrote for Friedrich III in 1702 Leibniz promised an annual volume of Miscellanea. After more than two years of preparation and one year of printing the first volume of the Miscellanea Berolinensia was ready in May 1710. It contains sixty scientific contributions among them twelve articles written by Leibniz including the most important one "Brevis descriptio machinae arithmeticae cum figura; quam vid. Fig 73" with the engraved plate showing Leibniz calculating machine. The first volume is quite rare especially when complete as here with all 31 engraved plates and the frontispiece. "This volume is a collection of papers mainly by Leibniz including the description of his calculating machine. The engraving of the machine is not exact. A great deal of artistic license has been used in order to show some of the dials and the top of the machine uncluttered by the human-assisted carry mechanism. Thirteen years after this publication the first of the continuations of this title were issued when it was adopted as the title for the official journal of the Royal Prussian Academy of Science.The volume also contains a plate showing two Japanese men engaged in a game of Go a game more complex than chess played with black and white counters called stones. It is noteworthy that the details of the game had reached Europe by the end of the eighteenth century. The man playing white on the right side of the image is using the traditional two-finger method of holding a stone. He must have been the stronger player because black has two stones on the "44" points which are used as a handicap to make the game even. This level of detail suggests that this illustration was copied from a picture sent directly from Japan. However the engraver erred when depicting the board. Go is played on a square board with nineteen rows and columns of lines - this board is not square and appears to be fifteen by seventeen. The lower part of the frontispiece shows a tiny model of Leibniz's calculator and two bits of text associated with Leibniz: one a series summing to /4 1 - 1/3 1/5 - 1/7 etc. discovered by Leibniz in 1674 and the other an expression from calculus a dx = 2y dy" Tomash & Williams L69. In addition to numerous other important essays the first volume contains the description and depiction of the so-called "four-species calculating machine" which is extremely important and trend-setting - not only from the retrospective of the 20th century. Leibniz had discovered that computational processes can be most easily represented when they are broken down into binary combinations of numbers as he explained in his essays De progressione Dyadica of 1679 and Explication de l'Arithmetique Binaire 1703. By means of a staggering roller which moves several gears in different moments of displacement computing processes are triggered which are readable by means of numerical codes on eight different wheel dials and a result wheel. Thus Leibniz concretely translated his theory into a functional apparatus with which he already knowingly formulated the approach of transferring complex calculations with greater precision from man to a machine: "It is unworthy of wasting the time of excellent people with servile calculations because when you use a machine even the simplest can safely write down the results" is Leibniz's credo which leads in a direct way to the invention of the computer in the 20th century. Thus Konrad Zuse 1910-1995 takes over Leibniz's theoretical approach and with his "Z3" became the inventor of the first freely programmable functional computer in binary switching technology and floating-point calculation which he presented on May 12 1941 - also in Berlin. Leibniz's essay covers pages 317-319 to which the copper plate "Fig. 73" belongs on which the machine is depicted: Brevis descriptio Machinae Artithmeticae. It is the first published description of an independent functional calculating machine based on binary code. Likewise no less significant essays by Leibniz on the calculus of the infinite among others the Symbolism mem orabilis calculi algebraici et infinitesimalis . et de lege homogeneousorum transcendentali p. 160-165 or Leibniz's essay on gravitation: Construction problematis ducendi rectas quae tangunt lineas centrorum gravitatis pp. 170-173. This is followed by a paper from Johann Bernoulli's De appropinquationibus. Furthermore summaries of research in chemistry such as a groundbreaking paper on phosphorus Historia inventionis Phosphori. In section Literaria can be found Annotatio de quibusdam ludis an essay on the games of the peoples among them the popular Chinese "Weiqi game" a kind of chess which is illustrated with a lovely board see Cantor III 354f and Van der Linde I 91; Walravens China illustrata 150 with a note to the also included De libris sinensibus by La Croze. De originibus gentium ductis potissimum ex indicio linguarum deals with the comparative history of language an early type of comparative literature and "etymology as historical auxiliary sciences" NDB XIV 128. Jeder Band gliedert sich in drei Abteilungen Literaria Physica & Medica Mathematica & Mechanica. So enth�lt der Band I neben den Pr�liminarien insgesamt 13 eigenst�ndige Abhandlungen des Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz sowie den Briefwechsel zwischen Leibniz und dem Mathematiker Johann Bernoulli 1667-1748 aus den Jahren 1707-1709 vgl. Ravier. Neben zahlreichen anderen wichtigen Aufs�tzen enth�lt der erste Band auch die Beschreibung und Abbildung der - nicht nur aus dem R�ckblick des 20. Jahrhunderts - �beraus bedeutenden und zukunftsweisenden sogenannten "Vier-Spezies-Rechenmaschine". Leibniz hatte entdeckt dass sich Rechenprozesse am einfachsten darstellen lassen wenn sie auf bin�re Zahlenkombinationen heruntergebrochen werden wie er es in seinen Aufs�tzen De progressione Dyadica von 1679 und Explication de l'Arithmetique Binaire 1703 erl�uterte. Mit Hilfe einer Staffelwalze die mehrere Zahnr�der in unterschiedlich versetzen Momenten bewegt werden Rechenprozesse ausgel�st die anhand von Zahlencodes auf acht verschiedenen Radzifferbl�ttern und einem Ergebnisrad ablesbar sind. Leibniz setzte also seine Theorie konkret in einen funktionellen Apparat um womit er auch schon wissentlich den Ansatz formuliert komplexe Berechnungen mit h�herer Exaktheit vom Menschen auf eine Maschine zu �bertragen: „Es ist unw�rdig die Zeit von hervorragenden Leuten mit knechtischen Rechenarbeiten zu verschwenden weil bei Einsatz einer Maschine auch der Einf�ltigste die Ergebnisse sicher hinschreiben kann" lautet Leibniz' Credo von dem ein direkter Weg zur Erfindung des Computers im 20. Jahrhundert f�hrt. So �bernimmt Konrad Zuse 1910-1995 Leibniz theoretische Ansatz und wurde mit seiner "Z3" zum Erfinder des ersten frei programmierbaren Rechners in bin�rer Schalttechnik und Gleitpunktrechnung den er am 12. Mai 1941 - ebenfalls in Berlin - pr�sentierte und als funktionst�chtig vorf�hrte.Leibniz' Aufsatz umfasst die Seiten 317-319 zu der die Kupfertafel mit der "Fig. 73" geh�rt auf der die Maschine abgebildet ist: Brevis descriptio Machinae Artithmeticae. Es ist die erste publizierte Beschreibung einer selbst�ndigen funktionst�chigen Rechenmaschine auf bin�rer Codebasis. "Die Beschreibung der Leibnizschnen Maschine wurde 1710 in den Druckschriften der Berliner Akademie ver�ffentlicht" Cantor III 37". "Die wesentlichen Grundlagen der Computertechnik so die Rechenmaschine - sogar die dyadische - die Dyadik selbst der infintesimale und der logische Kalk�l die Kombinatorik und die Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung etc. sind von ihm entdeckt oder entscheidend weiterentwickelt worden" NDB XIV 130; siehe auch HAB Ma� Zahl und Gewicht S. 167 und Beiheft S. 24. Schon seit 1670 hatte der Universalgelehrte an einer Maschine mit Staffelwalze f�r die Berechnung der vier Grundrechenarten gearbeitet und diese im Laufe der Jahre immer wieder verbessert auch wenn das einzige heute noch vorhandene Exemplar einer Leibnizschen Rechenmaschine - in der Nieders�chsischen Landesbibliothek - doch nur unzureichend funktioniert. Entire volume: 10 148 467 1 2 pp. Bound in 18th century French calf spine with 5 raised bands gilt-decorated in compartments and with two gilt-lettered morocco labels boards and extremities rubbed corners worn. Text only very little browned occasional minor spotting faint dampstaining to upper blank margin of several pages but generally crisp and clean internally. Provenance: Kaiserl. Universit�ts-Sternwarte Strassburg ink stamps to first flyleaf and title leaf recto and verso. ---- FIRST EDITION FIRST ISSUE of Leibniz' invention of binary arithmetrics. Before Leibniz Thomas Hariot and Blaise Pascal had already demonstrated number systems other than the decimal and Caramuel y Lobkowitz in his Mathesis biceps 1670 was the first to publish explicitly on binary arithmetics. However "Caramuel's contemporaries took so little notice of his work that Leibniz was hailed as the discoverer of the binary system upon publication of his Explication 33 years later in 1703. Many investigators still cite this paper as the first published work on the topic. This technical error is justified in substance for the test of true publication is the existence of reaction and follow-up a test failed by Caramuel's work." Glaser p.20. The Explication de l'arithm�tique binaire by Leibniz appeared in the 1703 volume of the Memoires de l'Academie Royale des Sciences on pages 85-89. This explanation of binary arithmetic was the first publication on this topic to result in a significant impact on the scientific community. Leibniz now 57 had been a frequent contributor to the Memoires of this Parisian academy. The Berlin academy was not to begin its publications until 1710." Ibid. p.39. "Of binary numeration he writes 'it permits new discoveries in. arithmetic . in geometry because when the numbers are reduced to the simplest principles like 0 and 1 a wonderful order appears everywhere.' Concerning the binary calculations themselves '. these operations are so easy that we shall never have to guess or apply trial and error as we must do in ordinary division. Nor do we need to learn anything by rote.' Certainly Leibniz was not the first to experiment with binary numbers or the general concept of a number base. However with base 2 numeration Leibniz witnessed the confluence of several intellectual ideas of his world view not just the characteristica generalis but also theological and mystical ideas of order harmony and creation. Additionally his 1703 paper contains a striking application of binary numeration to the ancient Chinese text of divination the Yijing l-Ching or Book of Changes. Early in life Leibniz developed an interest in China corresponded with Catholic missionaries there and wrote on questions of theology concerning the Chinese. Surprisingly he believed that he had found an historical precedent for his binary arithmetic in the ancient Chinese lineations or 64 hexagrams of the Yijing. This he thought might be the origin of a universal symbolic language. A hexagram consists of six lines atop one another each of which is cither solid or broken forming a total of 64 possibilities while a grouping of only three such lines is called a trigram or cova. Leibniz lists the eight possible trigrams in his exposition on binary arithmetic juxtaposed with their binary equivalents. He had been in possession of his ideas concerning binary arithmetic well before his 1703 publication. In 1679 Leibniz outlined plans for a binary digital calculating machine and in 1697 he sent a congratulatory birthday letter to his patron Duke Rudolph August of Brunswick in which he discusses binary numeration and the related creation theme with 0 denoting nothing and I denoting God. Furthermore Leibniz sent the French Jesuit Joachim Bouvet 1656-1730 an account of his binary system while Bouvet was working in China. The Jesuits are an educational order of Catholic priests who while in China sought the conversion of the Chinese to Christianity hopefully by the identification of an ancient theology common to both religions. Bouvet began a study of the Yijing viewing this text as the possible missing link between the two religions. It was from this Jesuit priest that Leibniz received the hexagrams attributed to Fuxi the mythical first Emperor of China and legendary inventor of Chinese writing. In actuality the hexagrams are derived from the philosopher Shao Yong's 1011-1077 Huangji jingshi shu Book of Sublime Principle Which Governs All Things Within the World.
