VERBOD VLEES TE ETEN
Antwerpen De Vries - Brouwers . Paperback. ISBN 9789061005933. Nieuw. Erasmus Desiderius.
Veterum maxime insignium Paroemiarum. i. adagiorum collectanea Rursus ab eodem recognita ato aucta: Et ab Ascensio eorundem indicio ac repertorio ad finem ponendo inuentu õ facillima reddita: &c diligentissime impressa…with Varia epigramata.
Paris J. Barbier Denis Roce 1506. . 4to 20 x 14 cm. A4 a-i8; A8 B6 complete woodcut device on title-page woodcut initials throughout; a few early leaves with ink underlining. 19th-century full crimson morocco with covers ruled in gilt and with central gilt monogram of William Stirling-Maxwell marbled endpapers; spine slightly darkened rubbing to joints and extremities. Excellent collector's copy of the fourth edition of Erasmus' renowned collection of proverbs bound here with the first edition of his epigrams. This work was first published in 1500 as Adagiorum collectanea a slim anthology of 818 proverbs and sayings derived from classical sources; this edition contains 838 proverbs. These collections became extremely popular particularly with aspiring humanists who wanted to flesh out their own writings with passages taken from the ancients and thus appear more learned than they really were. The anthology eventually expanded to over 3000 proverbs. It typifies the humanist attitude to the classical text 'as expressions of a timeless wisdom first uncovered by the classical authors.' All early editions are scarce. WorldCat locates only five copies of this edition in public libraries. Sir William Stirling Maxwell 1818-78 was a historian and book collector whose extensive collection of emblemata now resides in Glasgow University Library: 'Stirling succeeded to his father's estates of Keir and Cawder in 1847. Between 1849 and 1852 he commissioned a young London architect Alfred Jenoure to carry out alterations to Keir House. The ambitious scheme transformed the neo-classical pile into an idiosyncratic expression of Stirling's tastes and interests. At the centre was his magnificent two-storey library lined in cedar with specially designed furniture and fittings. Dr Waagen found it "too remarkable a room not to be mentioned" and noted that every surface was carved with mottoes "the study of which would occupy an ordinary length of life very profitably" Waagen 453. The books were beautifully bound and embossed with Stirling's armorial devices and he himself designed the ex libris slips.' ODNB Erasmus online; Renouard P. XVIe s. II 108.Phillips Margaret Mann. The Adages of Erasmus. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press 1964. Paris, J. Barbier, Denis Roce, 1506. unknown

ERASMUS Desiderius
Encomium Matrimonii.Encomium Artis Medicae per eundem
Title within woodcut border & woodcut on verso of final leaf. 54 2 pp. Small 4to modern binding reusing an early MS. leaf over boards verso of final leaf a little soiled. Basel: J. Froben 1518. First separate edition of these two famous texts "In Praise of Marriage" and "In Praise of Medicine." The first work created a cause célèbre; written many years earlier in honor of the marriage of his friend Lord Mountjoy when finally published it was seen by the Louvain and Paris theologians as an implicit condemnation of clerical celibacy. The second work is Erasmus's expression of his views of the medical arts. It "presents a view of medical ethics that identifies competence beneficence and diligence as the physician's primary moral obligations. The activity of the physician when directed toward the patient in accordance with these obligations gives rise to reciprocal obligations on the part of the patient: gratitude and reward. The activity of the patient in accordance with these obligations returns honour and payment to the physician."-Albury & Weisz "The Medical Ethics of Erasmus and the Physician-Patient Relationship" online resource. It is dedicated to the distinguished physician Henricus Afinius the chief physician of Antwerp. These two works were first published a few months earlier as part of the Querela Pacis printed in Louvain. Fine copy and rather scarce. hardcover books
