‎Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Während das physiognomische Erasmusbild ein für allemal durch die Bildnisse Holbeins fixiert ist, schien das historische auf immer den Schwankungen unterworfen, die der Wellengang des Zeitgeistes auf dem Spiegel einer Epoche hervorruft - ein Schulbeispiel für die Relativität historischer Erkenntnis. Und trotzdem besitzen wir seit einem Vierteljahrhundert ein Bild des Erasmus, das an Klarheit der Umrisse den Bildnissen Holbeins nicht nachsteht. Es ist die Erasmus-Biographie von Johan Huizinga, die in der deutschen Übersetzung Werner Kaegis erstmals 1928 bei Benno Schwabe in Basel erschien und deren aus dem Gedenkjahr 1936 datierende kleine Ausgabe eben die 4. Auflage erlebte. Über dem Werklein muß ein Fixstern des Glücks gewaltet haben. Kosmopolitisch waren seine Anfänge, die darin bestanden, daß ein amerikanischer Verleger holländischer Abkunft seinem und des Erasmus Landsmann Huizinga eine Biographie zum Gebrauch durch amerikanische Studenten in Auftrag gab, weltweit war aber auch der Erfolg, von dem neben den Übersetzungen ins Italienische und Spanische nur die sinnvolle Episode hervorgehoben sei, daß die holländische Lebensbeschreibung des Mannes, den die deutschen Humanisten bei seiner Übersiedelung nach Basel als die "Zierde Germaniens" begrüßten, ihr deutsches Sprachkleid durch einen Basler Gelehrten und in einem Basler Verlag erhielt, als wäre Erasmus dahin zurückgekehrt, wo er bei Froben so manches seiner Werke herausgab. Das ist ein universales Milieu, in dem erasmischer Geist gedeiht. Doch nicht allein über den äußeren Schicksalen des Buches hat der Stern gewaltet. Huizinga ist in seinem "Erasmus" eine Fixierung des schwankenden Bildes geglückt, und die Hoffnung ist begründet, daß wir diesmal nicht länger das Opfer der leidigen Subjektivität, sondern selber objektiv "im Bilde" sind.
