ERASMUS, Desiderius
Colloquia cum notis selectis variorum. Addito Indice novo
Apud Adrianum Beman Samuelem Luchtman 1729. ~1st edn thus 5th rev edn 1st impr. Early binding in half vellum grey paper to boards. Raised bands and green gilt label to spine. 8vo 12.9 x 20cm. Moderate soiling to boards. Hinges sound. Marbled endpapers in French Curl pattern uncracked at gutters. Replacement front and rear blank endpages. Additional engraved title page signed ''P. P.''. Old repair to top margin of engraved t.p. where loss to top margin has been repaired with laid paper. Two small areas of loss to engraved t.p. where owners'' signatures have been vigorously removed one to repaired top margin & one to title cartouche in image with small impact on lettering. Printed title page in red & black with publisher''s insignia. Minor additions to the engraved t.p.: lettering added to the open book laid before Erasmus and companions. On verso of engraved t.p. some outlines of the image on recto have been sketched in pen. Multiple annots to printed t.p. some careful English translations of title and the rest inscriptions by George and Joshua Berkeley: signature of Joshua Berkeley; inscription ''hic liber pertinet ad Gulielmum Berkeley. Datuli a fratre Joshua Berkeley'' and ''Geo: B:-y His Book / Oct. 17 1749 / Tuesd: Evening''. This very likely records the possession of the book by three brothers Joshua Berkeley 1743-1807 Dean of Tuam William Berkeley d. 1814; Prebendary of Ballyhooly Cloyne; and George Berkeley 1737-1804 Vicar Choral of Cork & Precentor of Killala. Their father was Robert Berkeley 1698-1787 younger brother of George Berkeley 1685-1753 the philosopher and Church of Ireland bishop of Cloyne after whom UC Berkeley is named. It is tempting to imagine that the ''Geo: B: -y'' of the t.p. inscription might be the elderly Bishop Berkeley himself but it is more likely to be his nephew the young George Berkeley who in 1749 would have been 12 or 13 and who seems to have taken inscribing his book seriously even noting the time of day. A fair amount of neat pen underlining to the first 15pp. of the Colloquies with a couple of marginal notations the letter ''W''. Minor ink smudge to p. 40 pencil emendations to pp. 300 & 721 slight scattered foxing. Pen trials to final p. of index not affecting text. With life of Erasmus & index. Haeghen Bibliotheca Erasmiana p. 42. ~Robust packaging. Tracking can be added to overseas orders on request. Used books are exempt from USA tariffs. 1st edn thus. Hardcover. Very Good. 14 784 22pp. Apud Adrianum Beman, Samuelem Luchtman Hardcover

Engraved title page showing a scribe seated with two other men with an archway in the background. 63 colloquies in the original Latin with a brief biographical sketch of the life of Erasmus preceding text footnotes throughout text. House of Elzevir edition printed by Lodowijk Elzevir who met Galileo in 1636. His grandfather founded the publishing company in the 1580s. One of the many works of the philosopher and Catholic theologian known as the 'Prince of Christian Humanists.' Published in 1518 the pages 'held up contemporary religious practices for examination in a more serious but still pervasively ironic tone' Coffin/Stacey Western Civilizations. Christian Humanists viewed Erasmus as their leader in the early 16th century. Erasmus' works had greater meaning to those learned few who had a larger knowledge of Latin and Greek. Colloquies in Latin means a formal written dialogue thus in his book Erasmus explores man's reaction to others in conversations. The Colloquies is a collection of dialogues on a wide variety of subjects. They began in the late 1490s as informal Latin exercises for Erasmus' own pupils. In about 1522 he began to perceive the possibilities this form might hold for continuing his campaign for the gradual enlightenment and reform of all Christendom. Between that date and 1533 twelve new editions appeared each larger and more serious than the last until eventually some fifty individual colloquies were included ranging over such varied subjects as war travel religion sleep beggars funerals and literature. All of these works were in the same graceful easy style and gentle humor that made them continually sought as schoolboy exercises and light reading for generations. "Originally written in his early days at Paris as dialogues illustrating the art of polite conversation they were afterwards expanded into conversation pieces in which all the topics of the day were discussed with a freedom which ensured their popularity. Later in the century and up to the eighteenth century they were a set book in schools and there are lines in Shakespeare which directly recall Erasmus's words." - Printing and the Mind of Man 53 referencing the 1524 original Typis Ludovici Elsevirii [Lodowijk Elzevir] hardcover

ERASMUS, Desiderius
De contemptu mundi epistola.
Antwerp: Michiel Hillen van Hoogstraten 1523. Later vellum with the manuscript title and year of publication on the spine red sprinkled edges. 8vo. With a decorative woodcut border on the title page and 2 decorated woodcut initials. Very rare early edition of Erasmus first written work a letter in praise of monastic life which was only published later in his career. Erasmus wrote it in 1488 or 1489 when he was 20 years old at the request of Theodoricus of Haarlem a fellow canon at the Augustine monastery at Steyn in order to persuade his nephew to join the order. It circulated in manuscript form for many years and was likely used to entice prospective candidates to enter the order of Canons Regular of St. Augustine. The work is divided into three parts: the first seven chapters focus on the evils of this world; chapter eight through eleven on the pleasures of the religious life; and chapter twelve on the ultimate choice between the material world or the religious state. This final chapter appears to counteract the rest of the work as it advises Theodoricus' nephew to carefully consider whether he truly wanted to enter a religious order since being a Christian is enough in itself. As such it has been suggested that Erasmus rewrote the text before its publication adding the 12th chapter but as he apologises for his adolescent writing style in the preface the work was likely mostly unedited. The first edition was published in Louvain in 1521 more than 30 years after it was written. The present edition is the first by Michiel Hillen van Hoogstraten and one of four printed in 1523. It is exceptionally rare on both the market and in institutions as only four copies have been recorded in libraries and we have not been able to find any others in sales records of the past century. The vellum is slightly soiled. The work is slightly browned throughout. Otherwise in good condition.l Adams E-569; Erasmus Online 1383; Nijhoff & Kronenberg 804; USTC 403708 4 copies; Vander Haeghen p. 64; WorldCat 71746606 2 copies; cf. De Molen R. "First fruits.
