Very light rubbing to spines gilt a bit dulled. Bound into the front of both volumes a printed sheet: "This set of 'Printing Types' is affectionately inscribed to Floyd C. Parks by his associates of the Halle-Cordis Composing Room San Francisco California August 19 1938." Below this a vertical rule signed on each side by Halle Cordis and 13 of his other associates on both sheets. Also laid in is a black & white photograph of three men and a woman posing in 'firefighter' helmets. Cambridge: Harvard University Press 1922 i.e. 1923. Two volumes. xxxii 276 and xix 1 308 pages plus numerous plates some folding. Original black cloth with gilt spine lettering. 24.1 cm. Cloth slightly faded and rubbed; minor wear to spine ends. Light dust soiling to fore-edges and small spot to fore-edge of vol. II; rather faint foxing to gutters primarily near the front of vol. I and near the end of vol. II; still a very good set in plain paper covered slipcase worn chips to paper and some cracks but serviceable. Bookplate of Charles Harold Lauck Sr. 1896-1975 on the front pastedown of each volume. Lauck was the founder of the Journalism Laboratory Press at Washington and Lee University in Lexington Virginia and its director from 1932 to 1962. The Press was noteworthy for its publication of limited-edition books and pamphlets concerning bibliography printing history and graphic arts education. In addition to his work at Washington and Lee Lauck was an active member of the National Graphic Arts Education Association and the International Graphic Arts Association and served as president of the latter in 1939-1940. Second printing following the first of the previous year. A landmark study of typography covering the period from the invention of moveable type to the late 19th century and discussing type design and practices in Britain the Continent and America. The volumes were based on Updike's lectures at the Graduate School of Business Administration at Harvard University 1911-1916. Harvard University awarded Updike an honorary master�s degree for the book which remains a standard reference. In Volume I Mr. Updike discusses the Latin alphabet the invention of printing the cutting and casting of types 15th-century types in Germany France Spain and England as well as German Italian and French types of 16th 17th and 18th centuries. Volume II continues the discussion of types to the beginning of the 19th century and then describes American types and 19th-century types in general.
