‎Printing Types. Their History Forms and Use.‎

‎"In his comprehensive study of types from the earliest times to the twentieth century Mr. Updike founder of the famous Merrymount Press of Boston traces the sequence of development in typography and discusses the relative importance of each period and the lesson that it holds for the modern printer. The 367 illustrations reproduce carefully selected pages from rare and beautiful books. The text constitutes a running commentary on the historical and artistic significance of these specimens which exemplify the best work of printers and type founders from Gutenberg to Bruce Rogers." ‎Printing Types: Their History Forms and Use. Vol. I - II complete set‎

‎Oxford: Oxford University Press 1937 2 volumes 8vo 24 cm XL 292 pp 192 illustrations one folding; xix 326 pp ill. 193-367 one folding. Publisher's cloth first volume slightly sunned. An extensively revised second edition of the classic study on the art of typography spanning from the invention of printing to the 20th century authored by Daniel Berkeley Updike 1860-1941 an American printer and historian of typography. Originally published in 1922 this seminal work played a pivotal role in elevating typographical standards. Volume I delves into the inception of printing the evolution of typefaces in the 15th century and examines German Italian and French typographies from 1500 to 1800. In Volume II Updike further explores Dutch Spanish and English typographies from the same period elucidating on 19th-century "classical" typefaces such as those of Bodoni and Didot as well as English types from 1800 to 1844 and American typographical developments. Additionally practical considerations such as selecting typefaces for a composing room and historical industrial conditions are analyzed in their relevance to contemporary printing challenges. ‎UPDIKE, Daniel Berkeley‎

‎The Book of Common Prayer.‎

‎New York: Printed at the De Vinne Press for the Committee 1893. The flowering of American Arts and Crafts sensibilities First Updike edition deluxe limited issue one of 500 large copies on handmade paper. Planned by the distinguished printer Daniel Berkeley Updike 1860-1941 this issue features pages framed with garlands of various plants each appropriate to the text it adorns. The deluxe binding is similarly gilt with thistles and Tudor roses alluding to the British origins of the Episcopal church. Updike's rationale for the decoration is elucidated in the loosely inserted pamphlet which accompanies this copy. While his initial intention was to emulate medieval devotional volumes he was limited by the typography common to the entire first edition which would not allow for the introduction of ornate initials. Since the borders could not be illuminated it was decided that the simple monochrome patterns must be elevated by the use of symbolism. This would be botanical befitting the style of the Middle Ages. Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue an architect who often lent his skills to publishing created the designs for the binding and the borders. Although Updike's Merrymount Press was also founded in 1893 they were not prepared for the printing of The Book of Common Prayer and the presswork went to Theodore Low De Vinne 1828-1914 one of the founders of the Grolier Club. While Updike subsequently moved away from Kelmscott-inspired printing this early project is part of his cultivation of Arts and Crafts book production in late 19th-century America. Folio. Elaborate foliate borders throughout text printed in red and black. Original vellum spine and front cover lettered in gilt Gothic script and elaborately decorated with gilt foliate design with Tudor roses and Scottish thistle cornerpieces twin metal clasps endpapers patterned with gilt rose and thistle design top edge gilt fore and bottom edges uncut white bookmarker. Near-contemporary bookplate recording the volume as part of J. William Smith's bequest to Syracuse Public Library. Gilt bright vellum a little soiled small puncture to foot of front board a couple of minor bumps to extremities contents clean. A very good copy. Griffiths 1893/7. hardcover‎

‎Iowa City: Prairie Press 1961. Broadside approximately 13½" x 9" printed in black blue and red on wove paper; old bookseller's description taped to verso and from whence the following comes else fine. "Nowhere on this broadside does it show that it was printed at the Prairie Press but it is pictured in the article "Carroll Coleman on Printing - Excerpts from a 36-Year's Correspondence with Emerson G. Wulling" Books at Iowa no. 23 1975. In a personal conversation Carroll Coleman told me that he had always admired this quote and as he had just acquired Eric Gill's "Joanna" type he decided to make the first use of it for the body of this broadside." This is a distinct edition from that of the same text which is twice folded and printed on two sides. Not in Cheever. Prairie Press unknown‎
