Moynihan was a prominent British abdominal surgeon the son of Victoria Cross recipient Andrew Moynihan. "By the end of World War I he held the rank of major-general in the British Army and had been chairman of the Army Advisory Board from 1916 and chairman of the council of consultants 1916–19. He served as President of the Royal College of Surgeons of England from 1926 to 1932. He delivered the Bradshaw Lecture in 1920 and the Hunterian oration in 1927. Moynihan was knighted in 1912 and created a Baronet of Carr Manor in 1922. In 1929 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Moynihan of Leeds in the County of York. From Foreword: Several years before the hundredth anniversary of the American Civil War the American Ordnance Association planned a series of monographs on the weapons of that conflict. The project has a twofold purpose. First to commemorate the event in some unique but appropriate way; secondly to make available to students of the Civil War authentic data on the characteriestics of the weapons with which the battles of that war were fought. The present work is devoted to cavalry weapons -- and with good purpose. As all students of strategy and tactics know the Civil War was an historic example of mobility reconnaissance and fast maneuver. Many of its battles rank in history as classical examples which have been used as guides by military leaders of all nations. In no area is this more cogent than that of cavalry tactics. Those tactics were dependent not only upon the skill of the cavalry commander the bravery of the individual cavalryman and the condition of his mount but also upon the capabilities of the wapons with which the units were equipped. Thus a knowledge of the military characterisitcs of the cavalry weapons of the time is essential to a proper appraisal of the decisions of cavalry commanders and the outcome of those decisions. In this respect the military characteristics of all wapons of all battles of all wars are basic elements in appraising the final outcome. It is only one in a score of other busy little streets that intersect the Quartier Latin; but as I live on the rue Vaugirard or rather just beside it up an alley and in the corner of a picturesque old courtyard leading to the “Lavoir Gabriel†a somewhat angelic name for a huge barn-like structure reeking in suds and steam and noisy with gossiping washerwomen who pay a few sous a day there for the privilege of doing their washing -- and as my studio windows the big one with the north light and the other one a narrow slit reaching from the floor to the high ceiling for the taking in of the big canvases one sees at the Salon -- which are never sold overlook both alley and court I can see the life and bustle below. This is not the Paris of Boulevards ablaze with light and thronged with travelers of the world nor of big hotels and chic restaurants without prices on the menus. In the latter the matre d’hotel makes a mental inventory of you when you arrive; and before you have reached your coffee and cigar or before madame has buttoned her gloves this well-shaved dignified personage has passed sentence on you and you pay according to whatever he thinks you cannot afford. I knew a fellow once who ordered a peach in winter at one of these smart taverns and was obliged to wire home for money the next day. The title page is a wonderful large two page photograph of Berkeley huddled with a bevy of beautiful women. Vicki Vinton is in the front foreground semi-reclining and Vinton has signed her name on one of her long lithe legs. The definitive coffee-table book on Berkeley written with his cooperation with spectacular illustrations of his film musicals. Contains a foreword by Ruby Keeler. Proceedings of an early commercially oriented computer conference held on November 19th 1964 in Newtonville Massachusetts. The notebooks describe a wide range of computer equipment and applications. Speakers included computer science pioneer and antinuclear activist Edmund C. Berkeley known for having designed "Simon" the first "personal computer" in 1950. In January 1963 Berkeley was also the first person in print to describe an image as "computer art" upon publishing an image created by Israeli computer scientist Efraim Arazi in the magazine "Computers and Automation". Co-speaker Patrick J. McGovern had begun the EDP Industry & Market Report a year prior in 1964; that publication would eventually morph into both Computer World and PC World as well as spawning the "For Dummies" book series. McGovern achieved massive financial success; at time of death in 2014 his net worth was estimated by Forbes at in excess of five billion dollars.
