These are not only an important source in understanding Locke's late and mature view on religion but are probably the most famous and indebt discussions related to his seminal work "An Essay concerning Humane Understanding" Locke engaged in. The topic is of special interest since: "Religion and Christianity in particular is perhaps the most important influence on the shape of Locke's philosophy". SEP: John Locke. The debate was essentially about Locke's definition of substance in "An Essay.". Stillingfleet argued that Locke advocated against dualism mind - body and thereby opening a door to Unitarianism. <p>Uppsala: Veuve du directeur Jean Edman 1792. Rare French edition printed in Uppsala of the abridgement of the Essay on Human Understanding by John Wynne the format in which Locke's thought was most effectively popularized at English universities and in Europe. "In the last decade of the seventeenth century English culture held a frustrated fascination for the continental Republic of Letters. Frustrated because few Europeans could approach English ideas in the English language. Gabriel Bonno1 has shown how Locke's continental readers were dependent initially upon reviews in French-language journals – Basnage de Beauval's Histoire des ouvrages des savans Bernard's Nouvelles de la r�publique des lettres and particularly Le Clerc's Biblioth�que universelle and its successors. Interested parties such as Limborch and Leibniz did not really come to grips with the Essay until it had been translated into French. This was accomplished in 1700 by Pierre Coste.Coste was like Le Clerc a French Protestant refugee in Holland. In 1695 he translated Locke's Some thoughts concerning education into French and sent the author a copy. Locke was pleased and Le Clerc encouraged the young man to begin translating the Essay. In 1697 Coste was invited to Locke's retreat at Oates as tutor to the Masham children and as Locke's assistant. The translation was completed under Locke's supervision and was published in June 1700 prefaced with Locke's recommendation. Coste remained at Oates until Locke's death in 1704. Thereafter in the midst of a busy literary career he continued his work on the Essay bringing out a revised edition in 1729." AttigThe first French edition of Wynne's abridged Essay came out in 1720 translated by Jean-Paul Bosset and with the first book given in Le Clerk's summary reprinted from his 1690 Bibliot�que universelle rather than Wynne's. Lockes treatise grew out of a correspondence dating from 1684 between himself and his friend Edward Clarke whom he was advising on the education of his son. Locke was in Holland at the time. "His thought was marked by a ready understanding of and sympathy with children. Three main thoughts dominate the work. First the individual aptitudes capacities and idiosyncrasies of the child should govern learning not arbitrary curricular or rote learning taught by the rod. Second Locke placed the health of the body and the development of a sound character ahead of intellectual learning. In the third place he saw that play high spirits and the "gamesome humor" natural to children should govern the business of learning wherever possible. Compulsory learning is irksome; where there is play in learning there is also joy in it. Throughout he placed emphasis on good example practice and use rather than on precepts rules and punishment. By 1930 the circulation of these booklets had reached 500000 and could be found on the shelves of most libraries in the country. The original publications focused on intermediate english geography history of science home skills and child education. As interest and demand grew for these booklets at libraries the range of subjects swelled to reflect these widening fields of study. <br /> <br /> One of Locke's widest-reaching publications during his lifetime providing a formed philosophy to black lives in America. First edition.<br /><br />The Juntunen Site also known as 20MK1 is an archaeological site located on the western tip of Bois Blanc Island. The Juntunen site is located on a low sand beach about 600 feet from and 17 feet above the current lakeshore. The site was a large seasonal fishing camp covering approximately 2 acres. It was likely a seasonal fall fishing village similar to the nearby Scott Point Site. The site also contains five ossuaries plus an infant burial and additional remains collected from the surface. The site was used during the Late Woodland period probably over a period of time between 900 and 1400 AD. The burials primarily dated from 1200 to 1400 AD. The frequent but seasonal occupation of the site led to a stratified layering of archaeological remains at the site consisting of up to 25 separate layers. The Juntunen Site was discovered in 1932 by Robert Braidwood of the University of Michigan who found human remains eroding from the surface of a group of mounds. Excavations were carried out over the next few years. Mr. Charles Juntunen the property owner of the site discovered more remains in 1959 while bulldozing a road. Juntunen contacted The University of Michigan and the University's Alan McPherron and James Griffin conducted multiple excavations.<br /><br />Dr Reynold J. Ruppe 1917-1993 received his PhD in anthropology from Harvard University and taught at Arizona State in the Depart of Anthropology.<br /><br /><b>Condition:</b><br /><br />Dr Ruppe's stamp on front wrapper and title spine sunned corners bumped else a very good copy issued in its original wrappers. He discusses diseases in Carolina and describes the cultivation of indigo in some detail. Turnbull I 223. <br><br>ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Alexander Hewatt came to Charleston in 1763 as minister of the Scots First Presbyterian Church there. Fascinated with the history of South Carolina he soon became a keen collector of historical documents. When the British fleet arrived at Charleston in 1776 Hewatt and other ministers were required to renounce their loyalty to the king. When he refused Hewatt was given sixty days to leave the colony. He sailed for Great Britain where he devoted the next two years to completing his history. In 1780 he was awarded the Doctor of Divinity form the University of Edinburgh an indication of the esteem in which he and his work were held. "Hewatt's account reflects the influence of William Robertson and the Scottish school of historiography. less concerned with a strict chronology of events Hewatt instead focused on the interrelatedness of those events and their various causes and effects. His goal in doing so was to provide moral political and practical instruction to the colonists and to those in England" both of whom he hoped would see the importance of continuing South Carolina's close ties to the Crown" ANB. The work includes detailed descriptions of the climate topography and fauna of South Carolina as well as discussions of slavery there. He warned that the mistreatment of slaves was likely to "fire them with desires of liberty and vengeance." Chapter 5 in the first volume includes a full account of the Yamasee War while chapter 10 is devoted to the war with the Cherokee. <br><br>CONDITION: This set is overall VG with general shelf wear. Removal of bookplate on the front pastedown on both volumes and clipped rectangular front endpaper removed in both volumes. Leaves are in remarkable condition with extremely minimal foxing. Completely free from marginalia or annotation. Bindings are tight. An incredible set. <br><br>Additional photographs available upon request. Collated complete. A historical novel first published in 1893 which tells of the struggles of the young Jacques Ménétrier at the beginning of the 18th century. It was written by the French journalist and author Anatole France 1844-1924 who won the 1921 Nobel Prize in Literature. This edition was translated by Mrs. Wilfrid Jackson and illustrated throughout by William J. Locke. 2 pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally smart with just some light shelf wear to the extremities and rear board. Front hinge is slightly strained but is held firmly. Internally firmly bound.
