Half calf over marbled boards VG. 3 volumes lxviii301pp xvi397pp xii380pp large folding chart in volume I with an old repair to a tear which at one time split the chart from the book ownership signature of Chalres May to each title dated 29th July 1829 occasional neat pencil maginalia text blocks in good order with the occasional feint foxing later bindings rubbed especially to the spine of volume II & along the edges small split ot the leather at the base of volume II a fair set. The text is that of the 1793 edition published by T Longman & B Law et al. Effectively a 24th edition the text of the Essay does not include the excerpts from the exchange with Stillingfleet which is included elsewhere in the Works. This edition also includes the preface by the editor & a life of Locke. Momumental philosophical work by John Locke concerning the foundation of human knowledge and understanding. Current scholarship is mixed as to priority between this and the Basset imprint. Folio pages: 313 x 190 mm collates complete: A4; a2; B-Ccc4; 198 leaves misnumbered at 76 77 287 296 and 303. With the two emendations in Locke's hand on leaves A3 and A4. Yolton 61A. Bound in full contemporary calf rebacked and recornered with the original spine laid down. Title page with a small previous owner's name removed and professionally repaired but with some staining around the area. Second leaf with some offsetting in the same place. Two other leaves Ccc2 and Ccc3 with upper margins restored no text affected just touching top rule. Otherwise an excellent set internally. Page block tight with well-margined crisp leaves generally unblemished and unmarked. A monolith in the landscape of philosophical treatises Locke was the first "to attempt to estimate critically the certainty and the adequacy of human knowledge when confronted with God and the universe" and concludes that man has a means of controlling his own destiny and is thus not the pure victim of chance PMM 164. He advanced the concept of people born "tabula rasa" and filled through their lives by experiences. This concept formed the basis for the empiricist camp in modern philosophy later expanded by Hume and Berkeley. The Third Edition of the Essay being a line-by-line reprint of the second edition incorporating the errata. Locke's Essay Concerning Humane Understanding first published in 1690 was the first modern attempt to critically examine the nature and scope of human reason. The stated purpose was "to enquire into the original certainty and extent of human knowledge together with the grounds and degrees of belief opinion and assent." Reflecting the scientific temper of the times Locke sought to establish an empirical basis for all knowledge to show that "all knowledge is founded on and ultimately derives from sense. or sensation." Against the Platonic notion of 'innate ideas' Locke argues that the mind is a 'tabula rasa' with all our ideas coming from experience that is sensation and reflection a kind of internal sense perception. Pure reality can never be grasped directly by the mind without the intervention of ideas but despite the representative quality of our knowledge our ideas give us an adequate picture of the world with a fidelity "as great as our condition needs". The importance and influence of Locke's Essay on subsequent thinkers can hardly be exaggerated. It was the first and probably the most important statement of the empiricist theory of knowledge in the British tradition leading from Locke to Berkeley to Hume which when combined with the Cartesian rationalism of the Continent culminated in the critical philosophy of Kant.
