br. Nel saggio La regola del gusto il punto di partenza è la varietà e variabilità dei gusti. Vi è in essi un'apparente concordanza: le stesse parole, osserva Hume, designano in tutte le lingue approvazione e pregi, oppure disapprovazione e difetti. Accordo che non va al di là delle parole; anche nella critica, come nell'etica, queste concordanze universali non oltrepassano il significato tautologico delle espressioni: nessuno può negare che il bene è bene e il bello è bello, ma la diversità comincia quando si tratta di determinare quali cose siano buone e quali belle. Tuttavia questa istanza scettica è per Hume solo un punto di partenza. Essa sta a provare che il gusto è soggettivo, e quindi non si possono trovare regole critiche universali; ma soprattutto che non esistono regole a priori, e che anche le regole del gusto, come tutte le altre, sono empiriche, a posteriori. Con ciò è posto il problema fondamentale dell'estetica di Hume: trovare un fondamento alle regole del gusto, tale che renda compatibile la loro universalità con la soggettività che abbiamo prima constatata. Che ci sia un'universalità del gusto è per Hume una cosa indubbia: ciò per lui si manifesta nei casi-limite, quando si rivelano valori imponenti e disvalori indubbi, o quando si mettono a raffronto produzioni letterarie, o in genere artistiche, di valore notevolmente differente, per esempio una poesia di un qualsiasi autore mediocre con quella di un grande poeta. Questo fatto prova che, in un certo senso, esiste un gusto universale, oggettivo, pur difficile da scoprirsi. La ricerca di Hume non è metafisica, non mira a definire un'idea trascendente del bello, ma a indagare come si formano quei «campioni», quei «modelli» del gusto che stabiliscono la norma effettiva e positiva del giudizio del gusto.

br. Era il 1725 quando Francis Hutcheson pubblicò la prima trattazione organica destinata a definire la fisionomia dell'estetica assumendone l'argomento fondamentale della bellezza. Opera pionieristica e insieme d'incredibile attualità, l'Inquiry di Hutcheson è infatti un'indagine sistematica sull'origine dell'idea del bello, ma anche dell'ordine, dell'armonia, del design: ossia del progettare ordinatamente l'armonia. È perciò che qui compaiono temi capitali - quali la distinzione fra verità e valore, tra intelletto e piacere -, argomenti che in seguito verranno a identificare la stessa pertinenza estetica - come l'universalità del senso del bello e le connessioni fra bellezza originale e comparativa - e, infine, l'attenta considerazione del campo delle arti, ricca di fini osservazioni su pittura, scultura, architettura, giardinaggio, musica e poesia.
