‎Edition originale du premier livre de l'auteur, le texte pionnier pour l'invention de la photographie en couleurs ("A landmark in the history of colour photography").La plaquette reprend une communication faite à lAcadémie des sciences et un article publié dans la revue "Les Mondes". Cros y adjoint ici une nouveauté essentielle: la synthèse chromatique. La photographie en couleurs est née et ce procédé est à l'origine de la technique actuelle de trichromie.Un autre inventeur, Louis Ducos du Hauron, aboutît indépendamment et au même moment aux mêmes résultats, suscitant une polémique sur l'antériorité de la découverte et privant Charles Cros dune partie de sa gloire. In Freemasonry the broken column denotes the untimely death of Grand Master Hiram Abiff. The beautiful Virgin weeping denotes the unfinished Temple. The open book before her displays that his virtues are on perpetual record. The sprig of acacia in her right hand represents the timely discovery of his body. The urn in her left that his ashes were safely deposited to perpetuate the remembrance of so distinguished a character. Father Time standing behind her unfolding the ringlets of her hair denotes that time patience and perseverance will accomplish all things." - See Mendocino California Jeremy L. Cross: A teacher of the Masonic ritual who during his lifetime was extensively known and for some time very popular. He was born June 27 1783 at Haverhill New Hampshire and died at the same place in I86I. He was an active promoter of the Royal Arch system and issued the Masonic Chart in 1819. In December 1819 the 'True Masonic Chart or Hieroglyphic Monitor' was copyrighted a modification of Webb�s Freemason�s Monitor. The foreword admitted that few changes had been made in earlier texts of 'illustrations' by Preston and Webb. But Cross included forty pages of pictured emblems and from that time his Monitor became so popular it ran through sixteen editions in which Cross had an interest. "Henry Josiah Whymper. 1845-1893. An active Freemason in India and a member of Quatuor Coronati Lodge from January 6 1888 Whymper is remembered today for his reproduction in facsimile of the Regius MS. According to H.R.H. the Prince of Wales "He was a man of mark in and out of Masonry a Companion of the Order of the British Empire a Masonic Savant and a practical Mason." Initiated: 1872 . " Although a �Freemasons Magazine� was published from 1793 to 1798 the continuous history of masonic periodicals in Britain does not begin until with the establishment of the Freemasons� Quarterly Review by Robert Crucefix in 1834. His avowed intention included the hope that it might constitute �an archive where the events most interesting to Brethren may be recorded and regular biographies given of such worthy Masons who by their zeal and industry� have advanced the interests of their art�. In practice however he had an additional agenda to promote his scheme for an Asylum for Aged and Decayed Freemasons and give himself an opportunity for attacks upon those including the Grand Master opposed to the scheme. This magazine included articles about Freemasonry a section of �Masonic Intelligence� which included reports on the proceedings of Grand Lodge� and reports of lodge meetings held in London the Provinces and abroad. Crucifex died in 1850 but his magazine continued albeit going through a number of changes of title until its transformation in 1853 into �The Freemasons quarterly magazine�. Burlington Lodge where he was initiated on 16 April 1829 became Master in 1833. He was Treasurer for a decade from 1839 and simultaneously served as Secretary for 5 years in 1844. He joined Lodge after Lodge he was Master of Lodge of Concord in 1834 the year after he stepped down as Master of Burlington. Exalted into the Royal Arch Naval & Military Royal Arch Chapter in Edinburgh a year after his initiation he joined and progressed through the Chair of several chapters. He was soon involved in all the other Orders so far as they were available in England Scotland and/or Ireland. The Knights Templar Rose Croix and Ne Plus Ultra 1831 the Knight Templar Priest 1832 Ark Mariner 1833 Mark 1839. He was also involved in Freemasonry in France and USA. In between his Lodge Chapter and encampment activities he dedicated himself to what was his love in freemasonry: charitable work. " Although a �Freemasons Magazine� was published from 1793 to 1798 the continuous history of masonic periodicals in Britain does not begin until with the establishment of the Freemasons� Quarterly Review by Robert Crucefix in 1834. ‎ill., br. Gli antichi non avevano una chiara nozione del paesaggio. La scoperta, l'invenzione, anzi, del paesaggio nella pittura occidentale avviene tra il XIV e il XV secolo secolo fino poi a diventare un genere autonomo nel Seicento. Questa invenzione, per Flavio Cuniberto, è inscindibile dalla diffusione del francescanesimo nel XIII secolo e dalla sua celebrazione della Madre Terra come immagine del Regno di Dio, del Giardino originario. Inventando il paesaggio, i pittori cominciarono ad aggirarsi senza saperlo intorno a questo luogo: a ritrovarlo nel fascino inspiegabile che si sprigiona dai variegati paesaggi della Madre Terra, sulle tracce del primo formidabile «agrimensore» del paesaggio come memoria del Regno: il santo di Assisi, che lo «misura» percorrendo instancabile e come a passo di danza i luoghi dell'Italia Centrale: di quella Italia che diventerà di lì a poco il «giardin de lo Imperio». Analizzando le opere dei grandi paesaggisti, Flavio Cuniberto conduce il lettore dinanzi al fascino di questa idea: il Luogo, il Giardino originario, che ha attratto anche i grandi viaggiatori metafisici del nostro tempo: Martin Heidegger, alla ricerca di quella che chiama la Terra come Tale (e che non è soltanto la Selva Nera o il paesaggio del Reno), e Peter Handke, innamorato dei luoghi come può esserlo solo chi intravede nei luoghi della terra i contorni baluginanti del Regno.‎

L'epoca rinascimentale, fra Quattrocento e Cinquecento, è stata la culla di pensatori, artisti ed esploratori che hanno rivoluzionato il modo di vedere la realtà e ha uno snodo fondamentale nella figura di Nicola Cusano, il quale indaga per la prima volta l'essere umano, la natura e Dio in una prospettiva tridimensionale. ‎ill., br. In tutta la sua opera, Cusano ricorre a esempi riferiti all'arte e a giochi di carattere sociale - il gioco della palla, quello della trottola e dell'icona del Cristo onniveggente. Nel suo pensiero è presente un momento "immaginale" che lo accosta, del tutto naturalmente, all'arte e alla rappresentazione artistica. Alcuni artisti e tenaci dell'arte, tra cui Alberti e Jan van Eyck, sembrano avergli suggerito esempi e formule feconde a livello filosofico; altri, come Dürer e Leonardo da Vinci, paiono aver ripreso dai suoi scritti dottrine facilmente assimilabili al linguaggio dell'arte. In un caso soltanto questo rapporto risulta documentabile: quello tra Cusano e il pittore Leonardo da Bressanone, autore di un sorprendente affresco del Dio trivultus. Centrale, anche in questo caso, è la raffigurazione pittorica del "non raffigurabile", di quanto supera ogni figura e immagine. In questo episodio, dunque, una pittura mistica - che, a rigore, "non raffigura nulla" - s'incontra con un pensiero filosofico il cui oggetto eccede ogni nome, immagine e concetto.‎

‎br. Bello è un concetto di inquietante complessità, un giacimento di idee e intuizioni dilatatosi nel tempo fino ai confini estremi della riflessione. Bello, bellezza, sono tra le parole più ricorrenti per definire immagini, aure, fantasie e nutrire estri letterari, indugi filosofici. Si parla di bello in riferimento all'aspetto di una persona, alla suggestione di un paesaggio, alla forza comunicativa di un'opera d'arte. Ma si usa anche per indicare la capacità argomentativa di un discorso, la qualità di un'idea, la coerenza di una legge o la configurazione di una galassia. Eppure, a dispetto di una così grande diffusione, non vi è affatto chiarezza né univocità nel modo di intendere questo concetto. Umberto Curi delinea un percorso affascinante e innovativo che, muovendo dal mondo classico greco-latino, quando il bello era ritenuto il requisito di ciò che non mancava di nulla, conduce al pensiero moderno e contemporaneo e ai "tremendi" angeli rilkiani, quando ormai il bello deve lasciare spazio all'assenza. L'apparire del bello, suggerisce Curi, coincide con la manifestazione di un'ambivalenza insuperabile, con la rivelazione di uno scandalo, con l'emergenza di una contraddizione, che tuttavia scalda il cuore e ci consola.‎

‎L'immagine-pensiero. Tra Fellini, Wilder e Wenders: un viaggio filosofico‎

‎br. Questo libro è il tentativo di occuparsi non di cinema, ma di film. Senza sentirsi in obbligo di giustificarsi. Senza cautelarsi preventivamente con robuste dosi dell'Estetica di Hegel o del saggio di Heidegger sull'origine dell'opera d'arte. Senza bombardare il malcapitato lettore con il napalm delle citazioni. L'intento è di verificare, nel campo aperto della lettura del testo cinematografico, fino a che punto la filosofia "c'entri" o meno con il cinema, senza preoccuparsi che ciò che si dice, lavorando su un film, abbia la qualità di essere "filosofico". Si vorrebbe insomma considerare una buona volta risolta, o comunque poco interessante, la questione riguardante lo statuto del cinema. E affondare invece - fino a dove si è in grado di farlo, con tutti gli strumenti analitici di cui si dispone - nel vivo dell'opera cinematografica. Per capirla di più, certamente, ma anche e soprattutto per cogliere meglio in essa la presenza di una 'charis' inconfondibile.‎

‎Le verità del cinema‎

‎br. Tra cinema e verità sembra sussistere un'opposizione insanabile. Mentre, infatti, in quanto è una forma di poiesis, il cinema ha a che fare col "verosimile", la filosofia tende a raggiungere la verità. A ciò si aggiunga che il cinema appare lontano, in quanto intrattenimento, dall'austera serietà di cui è accreditata la filosofia. Risalendo alla "poetica" di aristotele, e richiamando gli esiti più maturi della filosofia francese della seconda metà del novecento, in questo saggio umberto curi cerca di dimostrare che al cinema può essere riconosciuto uno statuto paragonabile a quello del mythos antico, sicché esso esprime un altro modo, non meno rigoroso rispetto al locos, di sviluppare l'interrogazione filosofica.‎

Nel 1803, l'imperatore di Russia volle averlo come docente di letteratura greca nell'ateneo di Vilnius, ma d'Ancora rifiutò la proposta, desiderando rimanere in patria. Ha scritto numerosi saggi e memorie di antichistica, su scavi e ritrovamenti archeologici. Nel 1794 ha fissato, attraverso il confronto filologico di diversi codici, la principale edizione di riferimento del De Alimento ex aquatilibus di Senocrate. In questa famosa opera di estetica il celebre autore analizza il gusto neoclassico della riproduzione del corpo umano e divino raffrontato con quello dell’antichità analizzando minuziosamente capelli, occhi, viso, orecchie, occhi, abiti, modo di rappresentare il redentore, riti nuziali,funebri, libri e strumenti di scrivere. ‎br. L'Italia più di altri paesi è stata pronta, negli ultimi cinquant'anni, ad accogliere e studiare tutte le principali tendenze estetico-filosofiche che venivano maturando all'estero. Tutte, tranne l'estetica analitica angloamericana. Per lungo tempo da noi non se ne è voluto sapere nulla e i suoi testi, anche quelli più importanti, hanno circolato pochissimo. Nessuno o quasi ha voluto tradurne i testi, nessuno o quasi ha sentito l'esigenza di occuparsene. Eppure, negli ultimi quaranta, cinquant'anni si è molto lavorato, in ambito analitico, su una serie di problemi rilevanti relativi all'arte. Come ad esempio: quelli relativi alla definizione dell'arte e alla identificabilità degli oggetti artistici; le questioni riguardanti l'ontologia dell'arte ovvero i modi di esistenza delle opere d'arte; il tema della rappresentazione e quelli connessi della esemplificazione e della espressione; il problema del valore estetico e le procedure della critica d'arte.
