L'indagine del volume si incentra sull'esame di alcune idee estetiche del Giappone tradizionale che non sono state oggetto di analisi teoretiche sistematiche, ma hanno trovato espressione in concrete pratiche di vita e attività artistiche concepite come vere e proprie "vie" di perfezionamento spirituale. Il saggio si compone di due parti. Nella prima si pongono le premesse per indagare le idee-patrimonio dell'arte e della cultura estetica nipponica; la messa a fuoco di alcuni principi cardine che affondano le loro radici nella sensibilità "classica" giapponese contribuisce a illuminare taluni tratti della visione del mondo estremo-orientale. Nella seconda parte si analizzano alcune significative idee estetiche, la cui peculiarità è di non essere mai state organizzate in un sistema organico, forse perché troppo ovvie o troppo "vissute". Proprio nello spirito di tale dimensione esistenziale la struttura del libro segue un percorso non lineare, dettato essenzialmente da libere associazioni, ispirandosi al genere classico "zuihitsu" - letteralmente "seguire il pennello", ovvero pensieri in libertà, non necessariamente legati da nesso logico. Lungo questo percorso si sviluppano poi ulteriori diramazioni innescate da quei punti di congiunzione con il pensiero filosofico ed estetico occidentale che si offrono all'intuizione nella prospettiva di un'ermeneutica comparata.

Di questo sentire ci parlano le voci diversissime eppure segretamente accordate di venti figure esemplari della cultura moderna che hanno intrecciato nei loro sguardi Occidente e Oriente e che sono qui ripartite sotto tre insegne. La prima, Sguardi da Occidente, allinea le voci di Goethe, Schlegel, Schopenhauer, Montessori, Rilke, Focillon, Lacan, Malraux, Lévi-Strauss, Dorfles, Barthes, Zolla. Sotto la seconda, Sul confine tra Occidente e Oriente, troviamo Solov'ëv e Florenskij. La terza, Sguardi da Oriente, raccoglie le interpretazioni di Tagore, Nishida Kitar?, Coomaraswamy, Kuki Sh?z?, Fung Yu-lan, François Cheng. Sono venti perle di un pensiero comparativo con due secoli di storia scelte per costituire un unico filo di riflessioni sulla bellezza, sullo svelarsi inesauribile dei suoi riflessi; perché, come dice Solov'ëv, «la bellezza non appartiene né al corpo materiale del diamante né al raggio di luce che quello rifrange ma è un prodotto d'ambedue nella loro azione reciproca».

I Padri della Chiesa raccontano che Gesù di Nazareth è venuto tra gli uomini in figura “vile e dispregevole”, per sancire il primato della bontà sulla bellezza, dell’etica sull'estetica. Eppure, alle soglie della modernità, gli artisti rinascimentali rappresentano il Cristo incarnato come un Dio greco: alto, bello e muscoloso. È un passaggio simbolico di fondamentale importanza. Della bellezza dei corpi scava nel passato per spiegare il presente: anche oggi, i personaggi dello sport e dello spettacolo sono idolatrati per le loro capacità atletiche e il loro aspetto fisico, si assiste a una continua esibizione di corpi perfetti sui media per veicolare messaggi pubblicitari e molte persone comuni dedicano gran parte del tempo alla “manutenzione” e all'esibizione del proprio corpo. C’è chi parla di deriva edonistica della società occidentale, ma il culto della bellezza corporale può anche essere interpretato come un ritorno alle radici, come un risveglio della sensualità pagana. L'atto dello scrivere e quello del costruire tendono a ordinare ciò che nella vita si presenta come confuso, dandogli intelligibilità e significato. Entrambi devono anche rispondere a una necessità di protezione che comporta un'ineludibile responsabilità nei confronti della fragilità dell'umano. Come scrive Heidegger, infatti, l'uomo non abita perché costruisce, ma costruisce perché abita. Così, se il costruire rimanda all'abitare, l'abitare interpreta e discute il costruire, lo confronta con le proprie aspettative, a volte lo accusa. E la qualità del nostro essere nel mondo dipende in larga parte dalla comprensione e dal procedere di questa dinamica.

Grammatica storica delle arti figurative
br. In una civiltà come quella attuale in cui, come scrive Sergio Bettini, "l'esistere prevale sull'essere anche nella struttura dei linguaggi artistici il "tempo" prevale sullo "spazio", l'"espressionismo" prevale sull'"impressionismo", le arti "industriali" o applicate, e l'architettura, prevalgono sulla scultura delle "statue" e sulla pittura dei "quadri". La differenza classica tra grande arte e arti minori si attenua fino a scomparire, in un'epoca che invoca più che mai categorie adeguate per essere in grado di comprendere se stessa, i contributi degli storici dell'arte della Scuola di Vienna e in particolare del suo esponente centrale Alois Riegl (1858-1905) restano tuttora un patrimonio pressoché intatto. In questo studio si affronta il senso del processo artistico sulla scorta del confronto dell'uomo con la natura, dove però non si tratta di imitare la natura, ma di competere con essa e migliorarla. In questo quadro - che varia nel tempo e in base al quale sono rilette tutte le epoche della storia dell'arte dall'antichità alla modernità - egli identifica una serie di "elementi" costanti per cui storicamente l'opera d'arte si costituisce come tale (fine, materia prima, tecnica, motivo, relazione forma-superficie) e che, come nella struttura delle lingue storiche, si declinano in maniera diversissima a seconda delle necessità espressive che il tempo e il luogo richiedono.
