The chief argument here is that Christians are not obliged to believe the endlessness of evil the dogma that evil is infinite. No defense is possible for this idea. God according to the writer brings infinite good even out of infinite evil. Neither scriptures nor logical reasoning vindicate the assertion that evil can be endless. Well bound in the original blue cloth with bright gilt titles to both the front board and the spine.Clean endpapers no marks or previous owners signatures. Black and white portrait frontis: "R.Wor. Bro. C. E. Keyser P.G.W." Clear English text throughout just the odd brown spot or small blemish. Well illustrated with a further 5 full-page plates 3 coloured and showing the designs for the tracing boards. A very good copy of this scarce book. "Hertford Lodge No. 403. The Warrant of the Lodge is dated the 31st August 1829 and the Lodge was consecrated at the Salisbury Arms Inn Hertford on the 8th September 1829 by W. Bro. John Bott P.G.D. When consecrated its number was 849 in 1832 it became No.578 and in 1863 No.403. It would appear that no mention is made in the minutes of the fact that the number was altered. It is the oldest Lodge in the Province of Hertfordshire the next oldest - the Watford Lodge - having been consecrated as the Bamborough Lodge on the 13th November 1829. Pensieri sulla pittura
Anton Raphael Mengs (1728-1779), grande pittore e scrittore d'arte, tedesco di nascita ma romano di adozione, è uno dei massimi rappresentanti della cultura artistica del Settecento. E i suoi Pensieri sulla Bellezza e sul Gusto nella Pittura, scritti nel 1762 a Roma in stretto contatto col magistero dell'amico Winckelmann, sono uno dei testi capitali del Neoclassicismo. Questo piccolo libretto infatti ebbe subito un enorme successo in tutta Europa e procurò all'autore la singolare fama di «pittore filosofo». In realtà Mengs era alieno da ambizioni filosofiche, ma il suo saggio colmava un vuoto che dopo Winckelmann sembrava intollerabile: quello di una attuale e militante teoria della pittura. Riproponendo l'annoso confronto fra antico e moderno alla luce dell'ideale neoclassico di bellezza, Mengs tratteggiò un'estetica "moderna" della pittura elaborata a partire dalla rivisitazione delle opere dei grandi pittori – segnatamente Raffaello, Correggio e Tiziano – in una sorta di lezione accademica per il pittore dell'avvenire. Estetica, sistematica storica e taglio didattico fecero dei Pensieri di Mengs un testo esemplare, e che ancor oggi costituisce (insieme ai Pensieri sull'Imitazione di Winckelmann, il Saggio sopra la Bellezza di Spalletti, e La Bellezza Ideale di Arteaga, pubblicati nella presente collana) una chiave essenziale di comprensione dell'epoca neoclassica. La presente edizione ripropone la traduzione italiana pubblicata nel 1780 dal cavalier José Nicolas de Azara, amico ed esecutore testamentario di Mengs, una traduzione che s'impose nella comunità scientifica ed esercitò un'influenza di gran lunga più significativa del raro originale tedesco. Nel 1880 Antonio Ranieri pubblicò "Sette anni di sodalizio con Giacomo Leopardi", rompendo dopo mezzo secolo "il più religioso silenzio" in polemica con scritti fra i più "indiscreti" e "infausti" che cercavano di sminuire il suo "apostolato" e "l'ineffabile olocausto" di sua sorella Paolina al servizio del poeta. Il racconto di quegli anni è in parte una interminabile litania dei "più grandi sacrifizii" che "due mortali possano fare per un altro". Leopardi è lodato in modo generico mentre abbondano le notizie sui suoi "gravi ed irreparabili disordini fisici e morali", dei "più incredibili eccessi". Nonostante i molti "falsi" e l'abitudine di non riferire nemmeno una frase del poeta, la presenza di Leopardi finisce per ammantare di prestigio l'operetta.

ill., br. Per la critica tradizionale, a partire dal Rinascimento l'opera pittorica è stata concepita per essere guardata a distanza. Dalla distanza "ragionevole" si vede, e si apprezza, compiutamente la bellezza e l'armonia dell'insieme. Arasse ha smontato il principio della distanza classica in pittura. Ha dimostrato che dentro l'ordine generale di ogni quadro, dentro l'insieme della composizione, s'annidano dettagli che sfuggono a quest'ordine, e che arrivano a sovvertirlo e ad annullarlo. Queste piccole parti del quadro vengono percepite soltanto se si guarda da vicino. Dalla distanza ravvicinata si colgono gli elementi "segreti" del quadro, quelli a cui il pittore ha affidato il suo messaggio, quelli che riservano le "vere" occasioni di godimento della pittura. Attraverso la visione ravvicinata di Arasse, molti capolavori a tutti noti, e da tutti ripetutamente visti, si scoprono come "inediti", visti per la prima volta. Improvvisamente, attraverso un dettaglio, spunta una nota ironica, o un'allusione erotica, in un dipinto d'argomento sacro. Oppure affiora l'intento di forte critica politica, o la testimonianza umana ed esistenziale, in un quadro apparentemente convenzionale, a destinazione "ufficiale". O, infine, mediante il trattamento del dettaglio, il pittore può rivelare le sue più autentiche scelte stilistiche, la sua "idea" dell'arte.
