Pour Caro, le pessimisme a pris la forme "systématique et savante" d'une loi à laquelle les écrivains se soumettent complaisamment. Il voit dans ce pessimisme un aspect de l'influence du romantisme allemand et une justification malsaine des inégalités. L'auteur pose la question de la cohabitation entre la religion du progrès en cette fin du XIXe siècle et le pessimisme philosophique et littéraire qui "maudit la vie". Très lu, l'ouvrage contribua à la diffusion de la philosophie allemande en France, Schopenhauer particulièrement. Dos frotté, intérieur très frais. Bon exemplaire.

Questo libro è un contributo alla comprensione del pensiero morale di Schopenhauer alla luce della tesi che la sua filosofia sia un frutto, tardivo, del dibattito intorno alla rifondazione della filosofia seguito alla rivoluzione copernicana di Kant. Con la pubblicazione del "Mondo come volontà e rappresentazione" nel 1818, che richiama esplicitamente in causa concettualità kantiane che già da un ventennio sembravano avere perso ogni interesse - la cosa in sé, il rigido dualismo tra mondo sensibile e mondo intelligibile, la teoria del carattere -, Schopenhauer si riconnette direttamente ai testi kantiani, e insieme ai loro più autorevoli interpreti. L'ambito di ricerca principale intorno al quale ruota il presente studio è quello morale, e in particolare il problema del male a partire dalla ridefinizione che Kant ne ha dato nello scritto sulla religione come male radicale. Schopenhauer viene qui fatto dialogare con Schulze, Fichte e Schelling, che si sono direttamente espressi intorno alla definizione del male in Kant e alla funzione del male nel mondo, offrendo risposte che egli ha di volta in volta attentamente considerato e discusso.
