Das grundlegend Neue im wissenschaftlichen Denken seiner Zeit zu erfassen und systematisch auf seine wissenschaftstheoretischen Konsequenzen zu untersuchen, diese Aufgabe stellt Bachelard sich in Der neue wissenschaftliche Geist (Originalausgabe 1934). Statt aus der Sicht der Philosophie die Prinzipien objektiven Wissens zu bestimmen und dann die Wissenschaft daraufhin zu befragen, inwieweit sie diesen Prinzipien genügt, stellt er sich ganz auf den Standpunkt der Wissenschaff. Die Wissenschaftstheorie ist von den Ergebnissen der Einzelwissenschaften abhängig, nicht umgekehrt. Damit die Philosophie so flexibel bleibt wie die Wissenschaft, muß sie sich stets daran erinnern, daß das objektive Wissen auch das Ergebnis intersubjektiver Verständigung der Wissenschaftler einer bestimmten Epoche ist. Angesichts einer Wissenschaft, die inzwischen nichteuklidische Geometrien, nichtaristotelische Logiken und eine nichtnewtonsche Mechanik entwickelt hatte, fordert Bachelard für die Philosophie den Übergang zu einer nichteartesischen Wissenschaftstheorie. Descartes hatte methodisch zu begründen versucht, wie lediglich mit den Hilfsmitteln des Alltagsyer-standes die Prinzipien wissenschaftlichen Handelns zu ermitteln und dann anzuwenden seien. Bachelard sieht eine scharfe Trennung zwischen alltäglicher und wissenschaftlicher Erfahrung. Wenn die Wissenschaft Fortschritte macht, dann gegen die alltägliche Erkenntnis, nicht mit ihr. Sie geht nicht von Gegebenem aus, sondern konstruiert; sie schafft sich ihre Gegenstände geradezu, indem sie die Objekte der Erfahrung zerstört. Wissenschaft steht ihrem Wesen nach im Widerspruch zur Alltagserfahrung, sie ist prinzipiell aggressiv und polemisch. Und wie sie sich durch Distanzierung von der Alltagserfahrung formt, so schreitet sie durch Negation und Falsifikation voran, nicht durch Verifikation. Bei Bachelard ist sechs Jahre vor dem Erscheinen von Karl Poppers Logik der Forschung die Kritik des Induktivismus bereits voll ausgebildet. Gaston Bachelard wurde 1884 in der Champagne geboren. Sein erster Beruf war der eines Technikers bei der Post, anschließend war er Lehrer für Physik, Chemie und Philosophie, ab 1930 Professor für Philosophie in Dijon und ab 1940 Professor an der Sorbonne, wo er den Lehrstuhl für Geschichte und Philosophie der Naturwissenschaften innehatte. Folio 35.5 x 26 cm 17 pp 24 original colour lithographs by Chagall printed by Mourlot 96 black and white photogravures printed by the brothers Draeger and reproducing the etchings made by Chagall for the Illustrations for the Bible 16 pp. Text by Gaston Bachelard translated into English by Stuart Gilbert. Publisher's pictorial boards depicting David Bathsheba and God; moderate edgewear the spine showing some separation remains of the original dust wrapper corners slightly bumped. Chagall's celebrated illustrations for the Bible with 24 additional colour lithographs specially made for this Verve edition. 'Since early youth I have been captivated by the Bible. It seemed and still seems to me the greatest source of poetry of all time. Since then I have sought out its reflection in life and in art. The Bible as it were resonates in nature and it is this secret I try to convey' Marc Chagall. In this beautiful portfolio produced in Paris under the direction of the well-known publisher Tériade Marc Chagall 1887-1985 continued his exploration of the Bible as a source of inspiration for his drawings. The publication capitalises on Chagall's first cycle titled Illustrations for the Bible which had been specially commissioned by Ambroise Vollard the great art dealer and publisher of artist books and was published by Tériade for Verve in two volumes in 1956. ‎Créée à Lyon en juillet 1941 par deux camarades de lycée, l’éditeur et imprimeur Marc Barbezat et le philosophe Marc Beigbeder, Confluences offre un très large panorama de littératures française et étrangère. «Je ne crois pas qu’il existe à l’heure actuelle une revue qui fasse aux jeunes une place plus large, qui nous ait révélé plus de noms nouveaux», écrivait un rédacteur des Cahiers du Sud en 1944. Confluences comptera 58 numéros jusqu’en 1947. La mention de nouvelle série était un stratagème imaginé par les directeurs pour faire croire à l’administration de Vichy que la revue paraissait avant-guerre. Car la censure frappait indistinctement tous les nouveaux titres.‎
