‎<p>Au tout début du xviiie siècle, en Angleterre, une invention considérable va voir le jour et connaître un immense succès, celle d’une presse quotidienne extrêmement moderne en ce qu’elle rompt avec une forme de presse qui s’était jusque là contentée de transmettre des nouvelles politiques ou militaires. Cette nouvelle presse est symbolisée par un nom surtout : The Spectator, forme d’expression journalistique et littéraire dont on a pu dire, avec raison, qu’elle préfigurait tous les aspects du journalisme moderne. Un journal, donc, qui paraîtra quotidiennement (six numéros par semaine, 555 en tout) où se trouvent traités des thèmes d’actualité (sur les sujets les plus variés), des études de moeurs, des critiques littéraires ou d’art, et même des pages consacrées à la mode et au savoir-vivre, le tout accompagné d’un courrier des lecteurs. C’est en somme un dialogue véritable qui s’instaure entre le journal et son lectorat, dialogue empreint d’élégance et de finesse et d’une liberté de ton radicalement nouvelle et sans pareille. Les concepteurs et rédacteurs de la petite affaire sont Joseph Addison et Richard Steele : le premier (1672-1719) est anglais, imminent homme d’État, écrivain et poète ;<br>le second (1672-1729) est un irlandais qui se consacre, après une très brève carrière militaire, à l’écriture en devenant écrivain et journaliste. L’immense aventure du Spectator recèle foisons de trésors parmi lesquels ces deux dissections dont rend compte le journal en janvier 1712 : celle du crâne d’un précieux d’abord ; puis celle du coeur d’une coquette. Au-delà de la virtuosité littéraire de Joseph Addsion (il est l’auteur de ces deux textes), ces deux petits récits sous forme de songes s’inscrivent, à n’en pas douter, dans une longue et palpitante histoire de la dissection et de l’anatomie tout aussi littéraire que plastique. ‎Seconde édition, augmentée d'une table des matières. Cet ouvrage est un recueil de 145 articles tirés de journaux anglais dirigés par Joseph Addison et Richard Steele, traduits de l'anglais et publiés par Justus van Effen pour la première fois en 1723. Cette seconde édition, revue et corrigée, est augmentée d'une importante table des matières. Joseph Addison (1672-1719) fut un homme d'État, écrivain et poète anglais. En 1709, et dans les années suivantes, il travailla, avec l'écrivain, journaliste et politicien irlandais Richard Steele (1672-1729), à la rédaction du magazine satirique tri-hebdomadaire The Tatler (Le Babillard), puis du quotidien The Spectator, dont le premier numéro sortit le 1er mars 1711. Sa vogue dépassa rapidement celle du Tatler, et il connut un succès énorme. Addison et Steele formaient alors un couple brillant de journalistes aux talents complémentaires, le style élégant du calme Addison parant l'imagination, l'esprit et la spontanéité de l'impulsif Steele. Addison écrivit également dans le The Guardian (le Tuteur), journal politique d'opposition au gouvernement tory, lancé en 1713 par Steele, où la littérature, la morale et la politique furent traitées d'une manière supérieure. Sa manière d'écrire, dit Voltaire, fut un excellent modèle en tout pays. Justus van Effen (Utrecht, 1684-Bois-le-Duc, 1735) fut un écrivain néerlandais qui écrivit principalement en français. Il fit partie de l'équipe des collaborateurs du Journal littéraire de La Haye, avec Prosper Marchand, s'Gravesande, Sallengre, Alexandre et Saint-Hiacynthe. Il rédigea le Misanthrope (1711), feuille périodique dans le genre du Spectateur d'Addison, le Spectateur hollandais (en néerlandais), 1731-35 et traduisit de l'anglais en français, outre le Mentor moderne d'Addison, les Voyages de Robinson Crusoé, le Conte du tonneau de Swift, les Pensées libres de Mandeville. L'exemplaire de l'agronome Marie-François Chalumeau (1741-1818). Originaire de l’Auxois, secrétaire chez le duc de Laval, Chalumeau se mit à parcourir l’Europe à partir de 1769. En 1776, il voyagea en Italie avec M. de Laval. De retour en France, il tenta diverses expérimentations agronomiques et devint proviseur du lycée de Bourges. Il écrivit, entre autres, Catéchisme de l’impôt pour les campagnes (1790), Ma Chaumière (1790), L’Adultère, drame en trois actes en prose (1791), Discours sur le choix des juges (1791), Culture du département de l'Indre, suivie d'un Traité de l'impôt (1799), Instruction pour la multiplication des abeilles dans le département de l'Indre (1801)… Il traduisit aussi du russe, de Warclaw, Hymne à Catherine II, impératrice de Russie (1777). Full calf G. 2 volumes xiilvi239pp viii339pp in vol II pagination jumps at 306 to 309 but the text is complete b/w engraved frontis to each volume grand total of 16 engraved plates armorial bookplate of the Baring family over an earlier bookplate of James Drummond upper board to volume I detached marginal worming to both volumes occasional affecting the text or plate edge but with the meaning legible from the context occasional burn mark & smudges leather rubbed & worn with some loss to the corners & edges. The forth edition of this much reprinted edition of Ovid's Metamorphoses which had first appeared in 1717 & was editied by Garth with Dryden the providing much of the translating. It was to become the standard text of Ovid's Magnum Opus in English. The plates consist of a portrait of Queen Caroline consort of King George II as the dedicatee plus 15 plates showing scenes from the poems each dedicated to a different English noblewoman. a different English noblewoman.
