Arts de la dissection.
<p>Au tout début du xviiie siècle, en Angleterre, une invention considérable va voir le jour et connaître un immense succès, celle d’une presse quotidienne extrêmement moderne en ce qu’elle rompt avec une forme de presse qui s’était jusque là contentée de transmettre des nouvelles politiques ou militaires. Cette nouvelle presse est symbolisée par un nom surtout : The Spectator, forme d’expression journalistique et littéraire dont on a pu dire, avec raison, qu’elle préfigurait tous les aspects du journalisme moderne. Un journal, donc, qui paraîtra quotidiennement (six numéros par semaine, 555 en tout) où se trouvent traités des thèmes d’actualité (sur les sujets les plus variés), des études de moeurs, des critiques littéraires ou d’art, et même des pages consacrées à la mode et au savoir-vivre, le tout accompagné d’un courrier des lecteurs. C’est en somme un dialogue véritable qui s’instaure entre le journal et son lectorat, dialogue empreint d’élégance et de finesse et d’une liberté de ton radicalement nouvelle et sans pareille. Les concepteurs et rédacteurs de la petite affaire sont Joseph Addison et Richard Steele : le premier (1672-1719) est anglais, imminent homme d’État, écrivain et poète ;<br>le second (1672-1729) est un irlandais qui se consacre, après une très brève carrière militaire, à l’écriture en devenant écrivain et journaliste. L’immense aventure du Spectator recèle foisons de trésors parmi lesquels ces deux dissections dont rend compte le journal en janvier 1712 : celle du crâne d’un précieux d’abord ; puis celle du coeur d’une coquette. Au-delà de la virtuosité littéraire de Joseph Addsion (il est l’auteur de ces deux textes), ces deux petits récits sous forme de songes s’inscrivent, à n’en pas douter, dans une longue et palpitante histoire de la dissection et de l’anatomie tout aussi littéraire que plastique. C’est pour quoi il a paru fort judicieux d’associer sous cette couverture ces deux petits joyaux à un cahier d’images où les corps sont également ouverts, examinés, sondés, où les chairs sont visitées comme autant d’intimités retournées et mises en lumière.</p> Angoulême, 2018 Marguerite Waknine 56 p., cahier. 15 x 21

The forth edition of this much reprinted edition of Ovid's Metamorphoses which had first appeared in 1717 & was editied by Garth with Dryden the providing much of the translating. It was to become the standard text of Ovid's Magnum Opus in English. The plates consist of a portrait of Queen Caroline consort of King George II as the dedicatee plus 15 plates showing scenes from the poems each dedicated to a different English noblewoman. a different English noblewoman.
