br. La ricerca di personalizzazione, che sembra contraddistinguere gli uomini contemporanei, riguarda le sfere dell'esperienza umana, che comprende anche la morte e i suoi rituali. Nel tentativo di trovare un senso a un evento inaccettabile - la morte - questa ricerca si è recentemente impossessata del digitale per compiere dei rituali di commemorazione in grado di accordarsi alle emozioni personali in relazione al lutto, al dolore della perdita, alla paura. Per mezzo di una cartografia dei molteplici rituali di commemorazione che si trovano sul web vengono descritte le loro caratteristiche, analizzate le loro implicazioni antropologiche e sociali. Al tempo stesso viene indicata la tensione tra le pratiche rituali formalizzate e le pratiche rituali informali e tra la conservazione della memoria e l'aspirazione verso l'immortalità.

La collezione di carte e di visioni messe assieme in questo libro è a suo modo un viaggio - quasi un voyage extraordinaire come quelli di Jules Verne - negli abissi a noi più prossimi, e cioè quelli del fondo dei mari più profondi. Questa storia parziale e arbitraria si apre con un'immagine terribile e sublime, la "batigrafia" descritta da Thomas Burnet in Telluris Theoria Sacra alla fine del diciassettesimo secolo, e cioè una visione apocalittica della terra prosciugata alla fine dei tempi. Da allora sono state disegnate molte carte degli abissi, anche diversissime tra loro, ma tutte accomunate dal bisogno di vedere un altro mondo, che in massima parte è - e sempre sarà - precluso alla vista dell'uomo, e accessibile solo sotto forma di disegno. La rassegna delle rappresentazioni e delle visioni delle profondità abissali è anche la storia di una espropriazione e di una continua dislocazione, tanto da far pensare che ben poco resti ormai, sotto il mare così come sulla terra, di quella oscurità e di quella dismisura che sono la sostanza stessa dell'Abisso. Ciò accade perché una certa disposizione del pensiero efficiente sposta sempre più in là il confine del noto a scapito del dominio dell'ignoto, e lo fa con una tale determinazione da non permettersi e non permetterci di pensare l'Abisso per quello che è, e nemmeno di intuire come quel confine non sia affatto netto, bensì confuso e ripiegato su sé stesso. Osservando le carte e leggendo le storie che hanno cercato di immaginare il fondo del mare ci si può rendere conto di come l'Abisso costantemente si ritragga, ma allo stesso tempo penetri il pensiero che intende spiegarlo e le immagini che cercano di mostrarlo.

Nell'esplorazione di questa seconda Luna ci si è trattenuti specialmente nelle zone liminari, sul bordo tra la faccia perennemente in vista e quella nascosta, o sul confine mobile che separa il giorno dalla profondissima notte lunare, sforzandosi di guardare da una parte e dall'altra, e quindi di rinnovare lo stupore per la ciclica apparizione e sparizione di un intero mondo. Al termine di questo viaggio particolare ci si accorge che un'immagine apparentemente consumata, come quella della Luna, ha molto da rivelare non solo a chi ne è ancora attratto, nonostante tutto, ma anche a chi si occupa del senso generalissimo di tutte le immagini, di quello che mostrano e ancor più di quello che nascondono.
