br. In esilio a Guemesey, Victor Hugo scrive anche sulla questione della pena capitale. Lo spunto gli è dato dalla condanna ed esecuzione di un certo Tapner, colpevole di aver ucciso una donna per derubarla nella propria casa, fatto avvenuto proprio sull'isola dove lo scrittore viveva la sua condizione di "proscritto". Nei tre testi che qui vengono tradotti in italiano, Hugo si rivolge alla popolazione dell'isola chiedendo loro clemenza e mettendo in luce la "barbarie" della pena di morte. Il suo appello non ferma la mano del boia, e a esecuzione avvenuta Hugo invia una lunga lettera di protesta a Lord Palmerston, il ministro dell'Interno inglese, dove rievoca con attenzione minuziosa e persino a tratti raccapricciante l'avvenimento.

Questi curiosi animali sono le uniche creature domestiche che vanno e vengono a loro piacimento e che conducono segretamente una seconda vita di cui non sappiamo nulla, facendo ritorno a casa solo in cerca di cibo, riparo e (se siete dei veri privilegiati) il grembo confortevole di un umano su cui accoccolarsi.
