Di una sorta di esperimento onirico guidato in cui la colpa del divertissement viene lavata dalla partecipazione emotiva? Evidentemente no. Al di sotto del meccanismo socio-psicologico che ha sicuramente presieduto al boom mediatico pulsa il cuore di una verità autenticamente umana, del tutto slegata dal momento fittizio della narrazione e dalle infinite possibilità che esso sembra offrire. Una verità che dorme sotto le ceneri dei duelli magici per esplodere lucente nella catastrofe finale... Memento mori. L'intera vicenda è infatti una lunga meditazione sulla morte. Di volta in volta presentata come scandalo e ignominia, o come una vecchia amica con cui rapportarsi da pari a pari, la Morte è la vera co-protagonista di tutta la saga.

Da sempre l'essere umano ha cercato di comprendere il senso della morte e ha creato, in tutte le civiltà, rappresentazioni della vita ultraterrena, istituendo celebrazioni e rituali per i defunti, dove esprimere il valore della vicinanza e dell'appartenenza a una comunità. Oggi sta avvenendo una trasformazione paradossale: da un lato si celano la morte e la sofferenza, medicalizzandole in strutture assistenziali e sanitarie, dall'altro la morte viene sempre più spettacolarizzata, enfatizzata e anestetizzata dai mass media, contribuendo a incrementare la percezione che il decesso sia conseguente a eventi eccezionali, drammatici o violenti e non un avvenimento naturale e contingente della vita. Accanto a ciò, si stanno sviluppando nuove forme di ritualità funebre attraverso la mediatizzazione della morte, condividendo il lutto all'interno dei post nelle pagine dei social network, come se fossero nuovi santuari, custodi della memoria. Assume pregnanza la biografia del singolo, cioè una ri-narrazione della propria vita (e del dolore) e si delinea il bisogno di estimità, vale a dire di rendere pubblico ciò che prima era intimo e privato, con la possibilità di costruire un ricordo condiviso e condivisibile. Gli autori, stimolati da queste nuove prospettive, attingendo dall'esperienza di formazione e di sostegno nell'accompagnamento di persone e gruppi, hanno raccolto e organizzato all'interno di questo volume i materiali elaborati e utilizzati durante la loro attività. L'intento è di offrire conoscenze e strumenti che accompagnino singoli e gruppi nel fronteggiare e gestire la dimensione luttuosa della perdita.

Le esequie, gli apparati, le processioni che scaturiscono dal transito dei potentes rientrano nell'ambito di espressioni artistiche che la corte ha da tempo immemorabile codificato, finalizzandole a un contesto di relazioni e prestigio dinastico. Il "trapasso" è un palcoscenico dove si procede all'ultima omologazione, che nel momento della morte colloca il Principe alla stregua del più umile tra i servi. Egli attraverso la "pompa del lutto" legittima la sacralità del suo ruolo e lo stretto rapporto con la divinità.
