br. Nel settembre del 1993, a Norfolk (Virginia), le acque del fiume Lafayette restituiscono il corpo senza vita della diciassettenne Sarah Wisnosky. Fin dal principio i sospetti ricadono sul fidanzato, il ventiseienne italo-americano Derek Rocco Barnabei, che, al termine di un processo indiziario durato tre settimane, è condannato a morte per violenza sessuale e omicidio. Barnabei si dichiarò innocente e vittima di un complotto. In molti si mobilitarono contro la sentenza. Intervennero esponenti politici, il Parlamento europeo - che adottò all'unanimità una risoluzione sulla pena di morte citando nel documento il caso Barnabei, definendolo controverso, e chiedendo di commutare la condanna in ergastolo -, persino papa Giovanni Paolo II si unì agli appelli. Tuttavia gli estremi tentativi di bloccare l'esecuzione non sortirono alcun effetto. La Corte suprema rigettò i ricorsi presentati e Derek Rocco Barnabei fu giustiziato in Virginia il 14 settembre 2000. Alessandro Milan, agli inizi della sua carriera in una appena nata Radio24, intervistò più volte Barnabei e collaborò a due straordinarie dirette dal braccio della morte. In queste pagine, Milan fonde la puntualità dell'inchiesta giudiziaria con il racconto autobiografico, perché la vicenda di Barnabei non è per lui solo una prova giornalistica, ma un incontro umano che lo investe e lo segna personalmente. Per vent'anni ha cercato risposte agli interrogativi e ai dubbi sulla verità di Derek, seppure nella convinzione che nessuna risposta possa giustificare la barbarie di una condanna a morte. La pena capitale «è sbagliata, sempre e comunque, anche per chi si è macchiato di un crimine efferato oltre ogni ragionevole dubbio». È soltanto una vendetta, «di Stato, ma pur sempre vendetta».
