Notice of a Death Sworn at Mansion House
The Death of Charles Monk a Sailor
London: No Publisher 1792. Single sided manuscript note approximately 185mm x 215mm in size. Creased from old folds otherwise fairly bright and clean. Affidavit sworn at Mansion House on the 17th September 1792 of Searles Wood second mate on board the Essex East Indiaman lately arrived from Bombay affirming the death of a Charles Monk late fifth mate on board the same ship and that Monk had died on the island of Johanna on or about the third day of October 1791. There were several East India Company ships called 'Essex' this one was launched in 1780 and was replaced by another 'Essex' in 1803. Our unfortunate Mr. Monk died sailing on the fourth voyage under a Captain Strover which "sailed from Portsmouth on 17 May 1791 bound for Bombay. Essex reached Johanna on 28 September and arrived at Bombay on 17 November. On 12 January 1792 she was at Surat and she returned to Bombay on 22 January. Homeward bound she was at Tellicherry on 27 February and Anjengo on 8 March. She reached St Helena on 26 June and arrived at The Downs on 1 September" Wikpedia. Un volume in-8 de 232 x 155 mm pour (viii) 314 pp. Edition illustrée de 11 compositions originales de Stanislaw Rejchan, gravées à l'eau-forte en pleine page par Mme Louveau-Rouveyre et MM. Daumont et Duvivier, sous papier de soie. Relié plats percaline, plat avant pourvu de motifs dorés et noirs richement travaillés avec lauriers, double ovale, rubans, anneaux, plantes, pointillés dans les coins, le tout avec une double symétrie remarquable au sein d'un encadrement doré. Plat arrière doté d'un symbole plus sobre, toujours doré, qui ressemble à un mandala tel que rehaussé par un artiste du Second Empire, avec double encadrement ton sur ton. Le dos, plus récent, est un plein cuir lie-de-vin à 4 nerfs, deux pièces de titre avec nom d'auteur et titre surajoutées imprimées en caractères dorés et trois entrenerfs travaillés de motifs losange en pointillés. Toutes tranches dorées. Tranchefile. Couverture originale conservée avec son symbole à mention "Les chefs d’œuvre du roman contemporain" embossée en doré. Signature de l'ancien propriétaire à la plume, datée de 1888, sur la page de titre. Roman précédé d'un court avant-propos de l'auteur. Table des gravures en fin d'ouvrage sans table des chapitres. "Développer à toute leur puissance les dons physiques et intellectuels qu'il tenait du hasard, faire de lui-même le type accompli d'un civilisé de son temps, charmer les femmes et dominer les hommes, se donner toutes les joies de l'esprit, des sens et du pouvoir, dompter tous les sentiments naturels comme des instincts de servage , dédaigner toutes les croyances vulgaires comme des chimères ou des hypocrisies, ne rien aimer, ne rien craindre et ne rien respecter que l'honneur : tels furent, en résumé, les devoirs qu'il se reconnut et les droits qu'il s'arrogea."
