Dalla consapevolezza della fine biologica, stigma della nostra specie, muovono infatti le civiltà per allestire il loro apparato materiale e immateriale, i monumenti che sfidano la caducità, le grandiose visioni religiose che prefigurano l'inconoscibile, i sistemi di pensiero che elaborano il senso della finitezza, i codici morali che regolano la condotta personale e il vivere associato. Senza l'onnipervasività della morte non esisterebbe nulla di tutto ciò. William M. Spellman rende omaggio a questa signoria insieme drammatica e feconda, ripercorrendone i tempi e i modi dal Paleolitico a oggi. Convoca concezioni dell'aldilà e idee di immortalità, incarnata, disincarnata, sociale, ossia affidata al solo ricordo, e reincarnazione, teorie mortaliste, pratiche di congedo dei morenti, culti degli antenati, riti funerari, espressioni del lutto.
