Con arguzia epigrafica le parole di Miguel de Unamuno riaffermano una verità incisa su millenni di storia umana: la paradossale antecedenza della morte sulla vita. Dalla consapevolezza della fine biologica, stigma della nostra specie, muovono infatti le civiltà per allestire il loro apparato materiale e immateriale, i monumenti che sfidano la caducità, le grandiose visioni religiose che prefigurano l'inconoscibile, i sistemi di pensiero che elaborano il senso della finitezza, i codici morali che regolano la condotta personale e il vivere associato. Senza l'onnipervasività della morte non esisterebbe nulla di tutto ciò. William M. Spellman rende omaggio a questa signoria insieme drammatica e feconda, ripercorrendone i tempi e i modi dal Paleolitico a oggi. Convoca concezioni dell'aldilà e idee di immortalità, incarnata, disincarnata, sociale, ossia affidata al solo ricordo, e reincarnazione, teorie mortaliste, pratiche di congedo dei morenti, culti degli antenati, riti funerari, espressioni del lutto. Ma il grandangolo di Spellman inquadra anche un'assenza. Adesso, nel pieno di una "rivoluzione della mortalità" che ha invertito la spaventosa percentuale di morti premature o violente tipica dell'intera vicenda dell'uomo, è proprio il morire a venire occultato culturalmente. Negare la morte non ci aiuterà a vivere meglio.
