Innen Papier leicht gebräunt. - Monographien zur philosophischen Forschung Band III/IV. - Wenn auch Platon in erster Linie aus seinen eigenen Werken verstanden werden kann und muß, so enthält doch die griechische Philosophie vor ihm eine Reihe von Ansätzen und Lösungen, deren Kenntnis manche Problemfassung in den Dialogen erleichtert. So mag hier auf Folgendes vorgreifend hingewiesen sein. Bereits Anaximander von Milet vereinigt zwei große Aufgaben in seinem philosophischen Entwurf: eine Erklärung der Natur in einem rationalen, konstruierten Modell nach ihren Einzelheiten und die Zurückführung aller Mannigfaltigkeit der Welt auf einen einheitlichen Ursprung, aus dem sie entsteht und der sie regiert. Als solcher Ursprung gilt ihm das unerfahrbar Unendliche, das noch aller Bestimmung bar ist. Die einzelnen Gestalten der Dinge aber, wie sie sich uns zeigen, versteht er als qualitative Besonderheiten (heiß ? kalt, hell ? dunkel, dünn ? dicht usw.), die sich aus diesem ersten Unbestimmten ausscheiden, die aber für ihre Einseitigkeit und Bestimmtheit Buße zahlen, das heißt untergehen müssen, um im steten Wechsel dem jeweils andern Extrem Platz zu machen. Alle Bewegung wird so als ein Wandel aufgefaßt, dessen Gesetz der Gegensatz, dessen beherrschender Ursprung das Unbestimmte und dessen Ergebnis unsere Welt in ihrer qualitativ bestimmten Unterschiedlichkeit und noch weitere Welten ist. Dazu aber wird bereits die sichtbare Ordnung des Kosmos erkannt durch Entwurf eines geometrischen Modells: Die Erde ruht als eine Art Säulenstumpf im Mittelpunkt, Sonne, Mond und Sterne bewegen sich in bestimmten sich wiederholenden Abständen in Kreisbahnen um sie. Es ist zugleich der einfachste und großartigste Ausdruck für die ständige Aufgabe der Philosophie, durch ein rational verständliches zusammenhängendes Bild von der Welt im ganzen den Menschen mit seinem Einzelschicksal einzugliedern in die große umfassende Ordnung des Kosmos, denn in der Erkenntnis der Wahrheit gewinnen wir ja Anteil am Sein. Wir werden sehen, daß Platon in seiner Entwicklung und mit der Fülle der von ihm aufgeworfenen Probleme durchaus festhält an diesem hier schon deutlich erreichten Ziel. Dieses Ziel bleibt auch bei Parmenides letztlich dasselbe. Nur die methodischen Mittel zu seiner Verwirklichung und damit allerdings auch das Ergebnis ist grundlegend geändert. Parmenides fragt zum ersten Mal in bewußter Reflexion, wie, mit welchem Organ oder Vermögen des Menschen der eigentliche Gegenstand entdeckt werden kann. Und er sieht: Die Sinne zeigen uns stets nur Wechselndes, unzusammenhängende Einzelheiten, die in unverständlicher Weise bald da sind, bald nicht, bald so erscheinen, bald anders, von denen es jedenfalls kein zuverlässiges, bleibendes Wissen geben kann. Chr. in Athen oder Aigina; † 348/347 v. Chr. in Athen) war ein antiker griechischer Philosoph. Er war Schüler des Sokrates, dessen Denken und Methode er in vielen seiner Werke schilderte. Die Vielseitigkeit seiner Begabungen und die Originalität seiner wegweisenden Leistungen als Denker und Schriftsteller machten Platon zu einer der bekanntesten und einflussreichsten Persönlichkeiten der Geistesgeschichte. In der Metaphysik und Erkenntnistheorie, in der Ethik, Anthropologie, Staatstheorie, Kosmologie, Kunsttheorie und Sprachphilosophie setzte er Maßstäbe auch für diejenigen, die ihm - wie sein Schüler Aristoteles - in zentralen Fragen widersprachen. Im literarischen Dialog, der den Verlauf einer gemeinsamen Untersuchung nachvollziehen lässt, sah er die allein angemessene Form der schriftlichen Darbietung philosophischen Bemühens um Wahrheit. Aus dieser Überzeugung verhalf er der noch jungen Literaturgattung des Dialogs zum Durchbruch und schuf damit eine Alternative zur Lehrschrift und zur Rhetorik als bekannten Darstellungs- und Überzeugungsmitteln. Dabei bezog er dichterische und mythische Motive sowie handwerkliche Zusammenhänge ein, um seine Gedankengänge auf spielerische, anschauliche Weise zu vermitteln. Zugleich wich er mit dieser Art der Darbietung seiner Auffassungen dogmatischen Festlegungen aus und ließ viele Fragen, die sich daraus ergaben, offen bzw. überließ deren Klärung den Lesern, die er zu eigenen Anstrengungen anregen wollte. Ein Kernthema ist für Platon die Frage, wie unzweifelhaft gesichertes Wissen erlangt und von bloßen Meinungen unterschieden werden kann. In den frühen Dialogen geht es ihm vor allem darum, anhand der sokratischen Methode aufzuzeigen, warum herkömmliche und gängige Vorstellungen über das Erstrebenswerte und das richtige Handeln unzulänglich oder unbrauchbar seien, wobei dem Leser ermöglicht werden soll, den Schritt vom vermeintlichen Wissen zum eingestandenen Nichtwissen nachzuvollziehen. In den Schriften seiner mittleren Schaffensperiode versucht er, mit seiner Ideenlehre eine zuverlässige Basis für echtes Wissen zu schaffen. Solches Wissen kann sich nach seiner Überzeugung nicht auf die stets wandelbaren Objekte der Sinneserfahrung beziehen, sondern nur auf unkörperliche, unveränderliche und ewige Gegebenheiten einer rein geistigen, der Sinneswahrnehmung unzugänglichen Welt, die "Ideen", in denen er die Ur- und Vorbilder der Sinnendinge sieht. Der Seele, deren Unsterblichkeit er plausibel machen will, schreibt er Teilhabe an der Ideenwelt und damit einen Zugang zur dort existierenden absoluten Wahrheit zu.
