Penguin Classics Nov 2003. New Ed. Paperback. This is Nietzsche's first book and has become one of the most important in European philosophy. This powerful and very energetic work was inspired by the Greek tragedies and Nietzsche's passion for the music of Wagner. In 'The Birth of Tragedy' Nietzsche attempts to relate our pleasure for tragedy in art to our experiences of suffering in life.rnrnThis can be a very difficult book to read but is definitely one of the most important books of its genre. There is also a good introduction by Michael Tanner. Penguin Classics paperback
Bantam Doubleday Dell Publishing Group Aug 1988. 1st Anchor Books Ed. Paperback. The translator of this volume does not seem to grasp what Nietzsche is trying to do. He omits passages that are important for understanding of the text simply because the importance of them is not always clear at first. He also omits the references that Nietzsche makes to his own earlier works. This makes the text flow more smoothly but doesn't allow the reader the opportunity get a handle on what Nietzsche is up to and doesn't give the reader a sense of what other works by this author might be of interest. Again this is a good work but there are better translations available! Bantam Doubleday Dell Publishing Group paperback
