Si edita qui per la prima volta la Mitschrift di Louis Kelterborn delle lezioni di Jacob Burckhardt sulla Griechische Culturgeschchte tenute all'Università di Basilea nel semestre estivo del 1874 e in quello invernale del 1874-1875. Si tratta dell'unica fonte scritta conservata da cui Friedrich Nietzsche aveva appreso il contenuto di questo corso. Nietzsche aveva espresso il suo interesse per queste lezioni a partire dal maggio 1875, dopo che Louis Kelterborn gli aveva donato la sua trascrizione. Come risulta dalle memorie di Malvida von Meysenbug, Nietzsche aveva poi letto e commentato la Mitschrift durante gli incontri serali a Sorrento, mentre era ospite di Malvida. L'edizione di questo manoscritto si propone di contribuire alla conoscenza delle fonti da cui Nietzsche aveva elaborato la sua visione della grecità. L'introduzione si concentra sul rapporto tra questa Mitschrift e le concezioni della grecità di Jacob Burckhardt e di Richard Wagner, mentre nel Nachwort si dà conto sia degli interventi editoriali sia della genesi di questo manoscritto.‎
