br. Alla vigilia della seconda guerra mondiale uno dei più grandi filosofi del Novecento. Karl Jaspers, viene cacciato dall'Università di Heidelberg. dove insegnava, poiché marito di un'ebrea. Successivamente, seppur in condizioni di libertà vigilata, egli trova il coraggiosi pronunciarsi in due pubbliche conferenze su un tema assai spinoso quale il rapporto tra Nietzsche e il cristianesimo. Jaspers, consapevole del pericolo mortale cui va incontro la civiltà tedesca assoggettata al nazismo, vede quanto l'ideologia nazista può trovare terreno fertile in Nietzsche e, in particolare, nell'interpretazione strumentale della sua teoria del Superuomo. Perciò il suo discorso si concentra preliminarmente sulla necessità di leggere Nietzsche nel contesto generale della sua opera: non si può isolare un frammento nietzschiano e attribuirgli valore assoluto. Jaspers sottolinea il punto nodale della speculazione nietzschiana. Figlio di un pastore protestante. Nietzsche non ha fede nel cristianesimo: dichiara la morte di Dio e annuncia che l'uomo europeo è ormai entrato nell'epoca del nichilismo. Jaspers non si stanca però di ammonire: tanto compiaciuta è la critica nietzschiana al cristianesimo, altrettanto preoccupato è Nietzsche circa il futuro dell'uomo europeo dopo l'avvento del nichilismo. Il Superuomo dev'essere dunque un individuo capace di rinunciare all'illusione di Dio.
