Nietzsche's second privately-printed work of which he had 600 copies printed. The Genealogy meant to be an elaboration and an extension of Beyond Good and Evil has generated more scholarly comments in the past twenty years than any other book that Nietzsche wrote. The book�s structure which is more transparently discursive than most of his other works is that of three sustained and interlocking essays. The first addresses the origins of our conceptions of "good" and "bad" as against those of �good� and �evil� and contains Nietzsche's famous analysis of master morality and slave morality a topic he had first introduced in Beyond Good and Evil the previous year. The second essay traces the origin of a "bad conscience" � the phenomenon of the soul taking sides against itself � while the third and final essays attacks the Christian advocacy of ascetic ideals even while recognizing that �almost everything we call �higher culture� rests on the spiritualization of and giving depth to cruelty against oneself.� Throughout Nietzsche employs his "genealogical" method which has proven to be so influential in the 20th century most notably in the work of Michel Foucault. The work has been a traditional locus of confusion among simplistic readers of Nietzsche�s work: the apparent racial distinction between master-morality and slave-morality. CONDITION: Very good in recent quarter leather period style binding with gilt lettering and ornaments on the spine. Bound with the original front and rear WRAPPERS. Slight erasure mark on bottom of title page barely noticeable. Small dime-sized semi-circular discoloration to margin of last 20 pages not affecting text. Correspondence includes that with Erwin Rohde vol 2 and Jakob Burchhardt Taine Gottfried Keller Hans von Bulow etc. This is not the complete series of letters or correspondence which in this format ran up to 6 volumes yet while the volumes were issued on different dates and represent different printings they are all matching. This text is taken from Nietzsche's essay "Philosophy in the Tragic Age of Grieves" and contains three original etchings by Gottfried Honegger 1917-2016 a Swiss artist and graphic designer whose prints correspond to the intangibility and abstractness of Nietzshche's thought.<br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Original white paper wrappers stitched with black-and-white etching and black lettering on the front cover two black-and-white etchings by Honegger on the title page and at the end of the text; quarto size 11.75" by 8" pagination: i-iv 5-18 19-20 1 colophon one of 100 copies this number 60 thirty-five copies were also printed with an additional suite of prints twenty-six copies were lettered A to Z and offered to employees only signed by Gottfried Honegger. Wraps covered with an acetate wrapper. Please note that the text is in German.<br/><br/>___CONDITION: Volume is in fine condition with clean wrappers the corners straight and unrubbed the binding tight the interior is clean and bright and free of prior owner markings; a very small crease to the top corner of the back wrapper else fine. Edition originale, tirage limité à 1250 exemplaires. Celui-ci, numéroté 179, imprimé sur papier de Hollande Van Gelder Zonen. Impression en noir et marron terre de Sienne. La page de titre, souvent reproduite, et les ornements typographiques sont l’oeuvre d'Henry Van de Velde (1863-1957) qui donne l’un des chefs-d’œuvre de l'art du livre Jugendstil. Composé en 1888 peu avant que Nietzsche ne sombre dans la démence, l’ouvrage fut édité vingt ans après, à titre posthume, par Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche. Sur les conditions de cette publication, cf. William Schaberg, ‘The Nietzsche Canon’, p. 184-185. (Sarkowski, 1201). Bel exemplaire, sans rousseurs, préservé sous son emboîtage de parution comportant une étiquette de titre et le numéro de justification.
