NIETZSCHE Friedrich
Zur Genealogie der Moral On the Genealogy of Morals
Leipzig: C. G. Naumann 1887. First edition. Hardcover with wrappers. Very Good. Master Morality and Slave Morality Compared w/ WRAPPERS NIETZSCHE Friedrich. Zur Genealogie der Moral On the Genealogy of Morals. C. G. Naumann Leipzig 1887. Front wrapper TP III-XIV half title 1-182 183 = Inhalt 184 = Printers information Rear wrapper with advertisements Octavo. First Edition bound with original WRAPPERS. Schaberg 53. Nietzsche's second privately-printed work of which he had 600 copies printed. The Genealogy meant to be an elaboration and an extension of Beyond Good and Evil has generated more scholarly comments in the past twenty years than any other book that Nietzsche wrote. The books structure which is more transparently discursive than most of his other works is that of three sustained and interlocking essays. The first addresses the origins of our conceptions of "good" and "bad" as against those of good and evil and contains Nietzsche's famous analysis of master morality and slave morality a topic he had first introduced in Beyond Good and Evil the previous year. The second essay traces the origin of a "bad conscience" the phenomenon of the soul taking sides against itself while the third and final essays attacks the Christian advocacy of ascetic ideals even while recognizing that almost everything we call higher culture rests on the spiritualization of and giving depth to cruelty against oneself. Throughout Nietzsche employs his "genealogical" method which has proven to be so influential in the 20th century most notably in the work of Michel Foucault. The work has been a traditional locus of confusion among simplistic readers of Nietzsches work: the apparent racial distinction between master-morality and slave-morality. CONDITION: Very good in recent quarter leather period style binding with gilt lettering and ornaments on the spine. Bound with the original front and rear WRAPPERS. Slight erasure mark on bottom of title page barely noticeable. Small dime-sized semi-circular discoloration to margin of last 20 pages not affecting text. Very good or better copy of one of Nietzsches most important works.

PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST C. G. Naumann hardcover

NIETZSCHE Friedrich.
Unzeitgemsse Betrachtungen II: Vom Nutzen und Nachtheil Unconventional Observation II: The Use and Disadvantage of History for Life
Leipzig: E. W. Fritzsch 1874. First edition. Wraps. Very Good. Nietzsche Attacks German Historians NIETZSCHE Friedrich. Unzeitgemsse Betrachtungen II: Vom Nutzen und Nachtheil Unconventional Observation II: The Use and Disadvantage of History for Life. E. W. Fritzsch Leipzig 1874. TP III-VI 7-111 Octavo. First Edition First Issue in ORIGINAL WRAPPERS. Schaberg 25a. There were approximately 650 copies of the first edition in the first issue state. The second Unconventional Observation attacked the then current faith in historical research that was one of Nietzsche's major complaints with contemporary German culture and a topic to which he returned with some regularity in his later works. Contrary to prevailing opinion Nietzsche argued that historical knowledge is valuable only when it has a positive effect on human beings sense of life contending that history can play only three positive roles which he termed the "monumental" the "antiquarian" and "critical" explaining each of these in some detail before going on to enumerate the dangers of the current scholarly fascination with "history for its own sake." Finally Nietzsche suggests an antidote to the psychologically and ethically devastating effects of the conventional approaches to history proposing an amalgam of what he terms the historical the unhistorical and the suprahistorical attitudes as the healthiest approach to the integration of a historical sense into the life of the individual and of course for Nietzsche this always means the exceptional individual. As he remarks in the present essay tellingly for the understanding of the Nietzschean philosophy as a whole: The goal of humanity cannot lie in the end Ende but only in its highest specimens. In the words of Walter Kaufmann: Perhaps there is no more basic statement of Nietzsches philosophy in all of his writings than this sentence. CONDITION: Very Good in ORIGINAL WRAPPERS. Heavy foxing to title page and final leaf. Most pages unopened. Light chipping to edges of wrappers. Spine with minor restorations to head and heel. Gorgeous copy of a rare wrapper copy of Nietzsches second Unconventional Observation.

PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST E. W. Fritzsch paperback

Nietzsche Friedrich
Der Wanderer und Sein Schatten The Wanderer and His Shadow
First Edition First Issue in Original Wraps. UNCUT and complete! Wrapper edges and spine darkened. Upper spine and front corner through the first few pages chipped. Old seller pencil notes on rear wrapper and title page. Interior pages brightly beautiful. Very Good. A spectacular copy of one of Nietzsche's scarcest titles and the last installment in the Human All Too Human trilogy. Printed in an edition of 1000 copies of which "Only 192 copies of this book were sold in this first edition first issue state before the remainders were sold to E.W. Fritsch of Leipzig in 1886 – and then reissued with a new title page."Schaberg All of Nietzsche's works in original unrestored wraps are of utmost rarity. And to add even more gravitas this copy is hand-marked by the publisher on the front cover corner for special presentation to Nietzsche's closest associates: "Gratis im Auftrage des Verfassers" Free on behalf of the author 'Nietzsche remained respected in his professorial position in Basel but his deteriorating health which led to migraine headaches eyesight problems and vomiting necessitated his resignation from the university in June 1879 at age 34. At this point he had been a university professor for ten years and had just less than another ten years of productive intellectual life remaining. From 1880 until his collapse in January 1889 Nietzsche led a wandering gypsy-like existence as a stateless person having given up his German citizenship and not having acquired Swiss citizenship circling almost annually between his mother's house in Naumburg and various French Swiss German and Italian cities. His travels took him through the Mediterranean seaside city of Nice during the winters the Swiss alpine village of Sils-Maria during the summers located near the present-day ski resort of St. Moritz Leipzig where he had attended university and had been hoping to resume his teaching career in 1883 Turin Genoa Recoaro Messina Rapallo Florence Venice and Rome never residing in any place longer than several months at a time… Reluctant to construct a philosophical "system" and sensitive to the importance of style in philosophic writing Nietzsche composed the Human All-Too-Human trilogy as a series of several hundred short passages and aphorisms—concise condensations of his assorted insights—whose typical length ranges from a line or two to a page or two. Here he often reflects upon cultural and psychological phenomena by connecting them to individuals' organic and physiological constitutions. The idea of power for which he would later become known sporadically appears as an explanatory principle but Nietzsche tends at this time to invoke hedonistic considerations of pleasure and pain in his explanations of cultural and psychological phenomena. Given his harsh criticisms of hedonism and utilitarianism in later works e.g. Thus Spoke Zarathustra re: "the Last Man" Human All-Too-Human appears to many readers as an uncharacteristic work more science than art-inspired in its approach to health where Nietzsche was struggling to break free of Wagner's spell and which presupposing a fundamentally hedonistic moral psychology does not fully embody the pain-and-power-centered approach that he later developed.' NIETZSCHE Friedrich
Menschliches Allzumenschliches. Ein Buch fr freie Geister Human all too Human. A Book for Free Spirits.
Chemnitz: Schmeitzner 1878. First edition. Very Good /none. Nietzsches First Aphoristic Work and His Introduction of Perspectivism NIETZSCHE Friedrich. Menschliches Allzumenschliches. Ein Buch fr freie Geister Human all too Human. A Book for Free Spirits. Chemnitz Schmeitzner 1878. TP 1 leaf = Vorrende 1 leaf = Inhalt 1 leaf = Half Title 3 377. Octavo. First Edition First Issue Schaberg 29. Only 489 copies of this first edition first issue as the remaining 511 of the original 1000 first edition copies were sold to E. W. Fritzsch in 1886 for use in a new edition with new title page and without the ads. Thus this copy is extremely rare in any state. This is the first book by Nietzsche where he is listed simply as Friedrich Nietzsche rather than as prof. In fact Human All Too Human constituted such a radical departure in style and content for Nietzsche that he first proposed to his publisher that it be released anonymously or with a pseudonym. Schmeitzner however would not allow it. Reluctant to construct a philosophical system and sensitive to the importance of style in philosophic writing Nietzsche composed these works as a series of several hundred aphorisms a departure from his style up to this point. Much of the work is devoted to what one might now call "psychoanalytical" insights into the nature of common human experience and the origins of our human valuations. At the time serious inquiry into such things as the nature of dreams the meaning of pity or the phenomenon of laughter had no place in the field of philosophy. Human All Too Human also contains Nietzsches reflections upon cultural and psychological phenomena in reference to individuals' organic and physiological constitutions. The idea of power sporadically appears as an explanatory principle but Nietzsche tends at this time to invoke hedonistic considerations of pleasure and pain in his explanations of cultural and psychological phenomena. It is here too that Nietzsche's famous epistemological "perspectivism" is first broached: the view that "truths" are nothing more than interpretations of reality formed from different perspectives and more or less successful in their struggle against competing "truths." Like the four books to follow the present work is addressed to the "free spirits of Europe." It was the present work that finally divided Nietzsche from his greatest friend Richard Wagner more and more in Nietzsche's mind motivated by only the most simplistic greed for power and betraying the promise of his art. Includes initial half title before the full title page and the eere correction cut and pasted by Schmeitzner over menon a non-word to create meere sea on p290 aphorism 431 but lacking the rear advertisements. CONDITION: Contemporary morocco binding with gilt lettering to restored spine. Decorative endpapers. Very good. NIETZSCHE Friedrich
Menschliches Allzumenschliches Anhang: Vermischte Meinungen und Sprche Human All Too Human A Supplement: Mixed Opinions and Maxims
Chemnitz: Schmeitzner 1879. First edition. Very Good /none. The Second Aphoristic Work the Anhang to Menschlisches NIETZSCHE Friedrich. Menschliches Allzumenschliches Anhang: Vermischte Meinungen und Sprche Human All Too Human A Supplement: Mixed Opinions and Maxims. Schmeitzner Chemnitz 1879. TP 3-163. Octavo. First Edition Schaberg 31. There were approximately 350 copies of the first edition in the first issue state. The present work was conceived as an addendum to the previous book and it continues Nietzsches incisive observations and evaluations on any number of topics once again presented in the famous aphoristic style that characterizes these works of Nietzsches middle period the works for free spirits. Nietzsche saw this book so integrally as a continuation of the first Menschliches Allzumenschliches that he suggested to his publisher that it simply continue the pagination where the previous book had left off though Schmeitzner persuaded him against the idea. The philosophers presentation of his insights in what appears at first glance as a random assortment of loosely related fragments was a strategic decision. Even though he viewed his era as a decadent one in which a unitary world-view was difficult if not impossible and that the philosopher of his day could at best hope to illuminate a few spaces neglected in the great systems of the past he was also writing in self-conscious defiance of the great systems the works of Kant Hegel and Spinoza trying to retrieve the danger of real thought from the lethargy of thinking in which every question is already answered by reference to the system before it is even posed. NIETZSCHE Friedrich.
Jenseits von Gut und Bse Beyond Good and Evil BOUND WITH Zur Genealogie der Moral On the Genealogy of Morals
Leipzig: C.G. Naumann 1886. First edition. Very Good . First Editions of TWO of Nietzsches most important works NIETZSCHE Friedrich. Jenseits von Gut und Bse Beyond Good and Evil BOUND WITH Zur Genealogie der Moral On the Genealogy of Morals. C.G. Naumann Leipzig 1886 & 1887. TP III-VI VI = Inhalt halftitle 3-271 272 = Berichtigungen TP III-XIV half title 1-182 183 = Inhalt 184 = Printers information.Octavo. First Editions Schaberg 40 and 53. Nietzsche had only 600 copies of each of these works privately printed. Considered by most to be Nietzsche's most important philosophical work Beyond Good and Evil was the first of Nietzsche's "self-published" books. The work consists of nine interlocking chapters that delineate the profile and the task of the "free spirit" and the "philosopher of the future" and contains some of Nietzsche's most insightful and barbed attacks on previous philosophers as well as many of his most powerfully and elegantly formulated analyses. As perhaps nowhere else the Nietzsche of Beyond Good and Evil fulfilled his own criterion of literary greatness: To say in one sentence what others have required a book to say and then to say what they did not say as well! By any standard Beyond Good and Evil is among the greatest books in Western Culture. It is difficult to imagine another in which one can find so much. Here for the first time Nietzsche proposes a "natural history of morals" and proposes that the revaluation of former values is the central task to be accomplished by the philosopher of the future this indeed would be the primary task of his own final works. He begins: If a person should regard even the effects of hatred envy covetousness and the lust to rule as conditions of life as factors which fundamentally and essentially must be present in the general economy of life and must therefore be further enhanced if life is to be further enhanced he will suffer from such a view of things as from seasickness. And yet even this hypothesis is far from being the strangest and most painful in this immense and almost new domain of dangerous insights In addition Nietzsches concept of will to power plays a prominent and central role in the book as does his famous analysis of master and slave morality which is mentioned here for the first time. The work has been a traditional locus of confusion among simplistic readers of Nietzsches work: the apparent racial distinction between master-morality and slave-morality which Nietzsche ironically derived from the banal racist Gobineau is turned to decidedly un-racial purposes. But then Nietzsches meaning has never stood between his many ideological interpreters and their purposes. CONDITION: Very good or better. Bound in contemporary quarter leather with marbled boards and gilt lettering. Marbled endpapers. Light pencil notes to some pages. A beautiful copy all original of two of Nietzsches most important works.

CONDITION: Very good or better. Bound in contemporary quarter leather with marbled boards and gilt lettering. NIETZSCHE Friedrich.
Morgenrothe Dawn
Leipzig: E. W. Fritzsch 1887. First edition thus definitive. Hardcover. Very Good . NIETZSCHE Friedrich. Morgenrothe Dawn. E. W. Fritzsch Leipzig 1887. TP III-XI 1 leaf 5-363 Octavo. First Edition Second Issue Definitive. Schaberg 50. This is the Definitive Edition which includes the new 11-page introduction that appears here for the first time. These introductions from the Neue Ausgabe editions written in 1886-1887 are considered by many including Nietzsche himself to represent Nietzsches best writing. There were originally 500 to 750 copies available in this First Edition Second Issue state of this work The fourth "aphoristic volume" was subtitled "Thoughts on the Prejudices of Morality" and brings to central focus Nietzsche's attack upon and critique of Christian morality which was to be an ongoing theme in all of his later writings. The book is also more masterful than the earlier works in its artful use of "aphoristic" juxtaposition to engage the reader in his own reflections. Indeed Nietzsche seems more intent on conveying to his readers a particular type of experience in thinking than he seems concerned to persuade his readers to adopt a particular point of view. Dawn typifies Nietzsche's ad hominem approach to morality in which he asks primarily: "What kind of person would be inclined to adopt this perspective" and "What impact does this perspective have on the way in which its adherents develop and live" His answers to these questions are generally dispiriting. He is forced to conclude that Christian morality is basically self-denigrating vindictive towards others escapist and antagonistic to life. CONDITION: Very good in a lovely contemporary Naumann binding of half-morocco and marbled boards with gilt lettering to the spine. SOme wear to spine leather especially head and heel. Pages bright and clean.

PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST E. W. Fritzsch hardcover

Nietzsche Friedrich
Menschliches Allzumenschliches. Ein Buch für freie GeisterHuman All Too Human. A Book for Free Spirits AND Menschliches Allzumenschliches Anhang: Vermischte Meinungen und SprücheHuman All Too Human A Supplement: Mixed Opinions and Maxims
THIS COPY IS ONE OF A SMALL NUMBER OF ADVANCE COPIES SENT TO NIETZSCHE'S CLOSEST FRIENDS. A rather special association copy of a rare and important book Human All Too Human bound with its second installment – works that marked a turning point in Nietzsche's life and work.Menschliches Allzumenschliches. Ein Buch für freie GeisterHuman All Too Human. A Book for Free Spirits AND Menschliches Allzumenschliches Anhang: Vermischte Meinungen und SprücheHuman All Too Human A Supplement: Mixed Opinions and Maxims Chemnitz 1878 and 1879 Both works bound in one - early 20th century vellum binding with stylized spine lettering pages slightly trimmed. A Book for Free Spirits - No ads and rear wrappers but the gray front wrapper is presentany parts of the original wrappers are often missing in rebound copies of Nietzsche's works. First edition first issue with "eere" correction cut and pasted over "menon"a non-word to create "meere"sea on p. 290.Schaberg Ex libris Dr. Heinrich Duthaler with his ownership signature and his woodcut bookplate on the front pastedown. Duthaler was an eminent Basel Switzerland resident and late contemporary of Nietzsche. The front wrapper is modestly stained at the top right corner with a tiny portion of the bottom right corner clipped. The seventh section Wife and Child contains numerous margin notes and underlining – by Duthaler and possibly Georg Vischersee below for his significance. Otherwise the pages are unstained and crisp. Very Good. Ownership inscription on front wrapper "Mr. Georg Fürstenberger-Vischer / from the author!" Georg Fürstenberger-Vischer was the son-in-law of the classical philologist Wilhelm Vischer-Bilfinger who had supported Nietzsche's appointment at the University of Basel in 1869. Fürstenberger-Vischer maintained a close relationship with Nietzsche even after Wilhelm's death in 1874. In mid-April 1878 Nietzsche gave instructions to his publisher in Chemnitz for the dispatch of 30 advance copies of Human All Too Human to his closest friendsincluding the soon-to-be former friend Richard Wagner and the Basel Library. Shortly after April 20 the copies were shipped. Fürstenberger-Vischer was the first respondent on April 26 with a short thank you note to the perpetually ailing Nietzsche who just a few months earlier had received a bottle of Madera from Fürstenberger-Vischer in an effort to revitalize his health. The book would not be published until May 7. Overall there were only 489 copies of the first edition first issue as the remaining 511 of the original 1000 first edition copies were sold to E.W. Fritzsch in 1886 for use in a new edition.Schaberg This copy is a subset of an already small subset. Mixed Opinions and Maxims - First edition first issue. No wrappers bound but a complete copy with all the ads. A few finger smudges on the title page otherwise the pages are clean and crisp. Very Good. "Only 325 copies of this book were sold in this first edition first issue state before the remainders were sold to E.W. Fritsch of Leipzig and then reissued with a new title page. With the publisher's penciled hand correction to page 35 – correcting "Opfersinns" to "Opfe rthier's" – as requested by Nietzsche in his March 5 1879 letter to Schmeitzner."Schaberg "Nietzsche's health always fragile forced him to take leave from Basel University in 1876–77. He used the time to explore a broadly naturalistic critique of traditional morality and culture…Nietzsche's research resulted in Human All-Too-Human which introduced his readers to the corrosive attacks on conventional pieties for which he became famous as well as to a style of writing in short numbered paragraphs and pithy aphorisms to which he often returned in later work."StanfordFor even better pricing visit our website Schmeitzner hardcover
