Jenaer philosophische Vorträge und Studien (7).‎ ‎Leicht berieben, sonst sehr guter Zustand. - Am Beginn oder am Ende beinahe jeder Interpretation zu Hegels Ästhetik steht eine Auseinandersetzung mit der These vom Ende der Kunst. Diese These hat es den Interpreten zu keiner Zeit leicht gemacht, Hegels Philosophie der Kunst zu verteidigen. Schon Hegels Zeitgenossen mokierten sich darüber, wie der Philosoph sagen könne, die Kunst sei mausetot, da ihre Lebendigkeit doch offensichtlich war, das Interesse an der Kunst keineswegs abnahm. Die gegenwärtige philologische Arbeit an den Quellen zu Hegels Ästhetik wurde von Anfang an durch die Hoffnung beflügelt, man könne durch die Kenntnis der Vorlesungen und ihre genauere Analyse diese Grundthese der Ästhetik mit Hegels eigenen Argumenten entkräften. So lobt beispielsweise Sir Th.M. Knox, der die Ästhetik ins Englische übersetzt hat, Hegels revolutionär erfrischende, treffsichere Kunsturteile und vermag nicht zu sehen, wie diese mit dem dogmatischen systematischen Rahmen der Ästhetik Zusammengehen. Auch Dieter Henrich vertröstete bereits vor mehr als zwanzig Jahren die verzweifelnden Hegelinterpreten auf bessere Zeiten und vermutete, daß die Beschäftigung mit den späten Berliner Vorlesungen über Ästhetik oder Philosophie der Kunst Hegel als einen großen Kunstkenner ausweisen werde, als einen Denker der Geschichte, der sich gegen den Dogmatismus des absoluten Wissens durchsetzt. Allerdings ist diese Hoffnung trügerisch, und Hegel hat sie spätestens durch die Überarbeitung seiner Enzyklopädie von 1827 zerstört. Die erweiterte Fassung der Enzyklopädie enthält nämlich auch eine Verschärfung der These vom Ende bzw. vom Vergangenheitscharakter der Kunst. Die in historisch-philologischer Forschung aufgearbeitete Geschichte hält also im Fall der Ästhetik (wie so oft) nicht die erhoffte Erlösung von unliebsamen Thesen bereit.
