‎Gandhi and the Ali Brothers: Biography of a Friendship‎

‎Sage Publications 2013. Hardcover. New. The campaign of the Khilafat Movement and the Ali brothers’ close collaboration with Gandhi are well acknowledged in the pages of history. It is also well known that after the collapse of the Khilafat–Non-cooperation Movement the relationship between them became strenuous and the Ali brothers moved away from Gandhi. But what is not so well known is that the promise of the relationship when it was forged was astounding and Gandhi saw it as a solution to the problem of Hindu-Muslim unity which he considered fundamental to India’s independence. This book is a study of the relationship between Gandhi and the Ali brothers mainly in the context of the Non-cooperation and Khilafat Movements focusing on the period of 1919–1931. Gandhi’s involvement in the Khilafat agitation was his first direct intervention in an exclusively Muslim question translating it into a national question. This was his way of bringing the Muslims out of their community cocoons into the mainstream of India’s national politics. However as his relationship with the brothers broke down this turned out to be also his last such intervention. Consequently the issue of Muslim participation remained unsettled till Partition. Gandhi and the Ali Brothers narrates the story of the coming together the joint struggle and the parting of ways of Gandhi and the Ali brothers. It documents a lucid micro-history of the momentous developments in the personal relations of these political figures with the dynamics of Hindu-Muslim interface as the backdrop. Printed Pages: 248. Sage Publications hardcover‎

‎Wording the World: Veena Das and Scenes of Inheritance‎

‎Orient Blackswan Pvt. Ltd 2015. First edition. Hardcover. New. The essays in this book explore the critical possibilities that have been opened by Veena Das’s work. Taking off from her writing on pain as a call for acknowledgment several essays explore how social sciences render pain suffering and the claims of the other as part of an ethics of responsibility. They search for disciplinary resources to contest the implicit division between those whose pain receives attention and those whose pain is seen as out of sync with the times and hence written out of the historical record. Another theme is the co-constitution of the event and the everyday especially in the context of violence. Das’s groundbreaking formulation of the everyday provides a frame for understanding how both violence and healing might grow out of it. Drawing on notions of life and voice and the struggle to write one’s own narrative the contributors provide rich ethnographies of what it is to inhabit a devastated world. Ethics as a form of attentiveness to the other especially in the context of poverty deprivation and the corrosion of everyday life appears in several of the essays. They take up the classic themes of kinship and obligation but give them entirely new meaning. Finally anthropology’s affinities with the literary are reflected in a final set of essays that show how forms of knowing in art and in anthropology are related through work with painters performance artists and writers. The book brings together case studies from different parts of the world from Palestine Lebanon Chile the US and India. It will be of interest not only to anthropologists and sociologists interested in comparative perspectives but also to artists scholars in art literary studies and philosophy. Printed Pages: 492. ‎Writing Identities: Folklore and Performative Arts of Purulia Bengal‎

‎Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/Aryan Books International 2009. First edition. Hardcover. New. 15 x 23 cm. This work attempts a historiographic exploration of Bengali folkloristics through some of the performative traditions of Purulia. Positioned outside the mainstream of Bengal`s culture and society Purulia has traditionally been characterised as her `primitive` alter. Folklorists have played no small part in reinforcing this image by selecting precisely those genres for analysis that best conform to this image. An unintended consequence of such selective representation is that the forms come to mirror scholarly descriptions about them over time. Thus the chho dance described as a `tribal war dance` by Ashutosh Bhattacharya the doyen of Bengali folkloristics has come to acquire this image losing some of its subtlety and local nuance in the process. But as a `tribal dance` it has also acquired greater visibility than some of the other dance forms in this region. Folklorists are sensitive to the changes that the introduction of new media bring to traditional forms of performance. However they are less conscious about the changes wrought by their own writings. By describing the different representations of community and society in the writings on folk culture and in tracking some of the trajectories of their circulation in the public sphere the author shows how Purulia is re-constituted as a folkloric region. Printed Pages: 152. Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts/Aryan Books International hardcover‎
