Smith, Bradley F ; [Kermit "Kim" Roosevelt Jr's copy]
SHADOW WARRIORS - O.S.S. and the Origins of the C.I.A.
New York: Basic Books. 1983. First Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Autograph; 8vo; xvi 507 pages; Contents clean and secure in original black cloth binding in very good dustjacket with closed tear at top edge of front panel now in protective mylar cover; some minor rippling of last few leaves near inner bottom. Former owner's signature and address on ffep -- "Kermit Roosevelt . Nov. 7 1983" with a couple page numbers and notes in his writing including "a very opinionated pretentious and misleading 'history' !" He also comments on Smith's dismissal of effectiveness of covert ops what about Iran 1953. Roosevelt would have been intimately familiar with many of the operations and organizational developments described in this survey of the nation's first intelligence agency. Kermit "Kim" Roosevelt Jr. 1916 - 2000 was the grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt. He was a career intelligence officer who served in the Office of Strategic Services and was the mastermind of the Central Intelligence Agency's Operation Ajax which orchestrated the coup against Iran's democratically-elected Mohammed Mossadegh administration and returned Mohammad Reza Pahlavi the Shah of Iran to Iran's Peacock Throne in August 1953 for the purpose of returning Western control of Middle Eastern oil supplies. Assigned to Egypt Roosevelt impressed his colleagues with Project FF which encouraged the Free Officers Movement to carry out a coup d'état in 1952 and Roosevelt developed close CIA links to the new leader Gamal Abdel Nasser. In Egypt under Allen Dulles Kim Roosevelt supervised the CIA's operation to undermine the popular General Neguib and encourage the rise to power of Gamul Abdul Nasser. Even before his decisive victory Nasser was communicating through Roosevelt to make a settlement with Great Britain. These back channel negotiations eventually produced the treaty signed in October 1954. Hugh Wilford: "Roosevelt Jr. had this notion of America forming an alliance with the Arab countries as they emerged from under the sway of Britain and France. He was very concerned with backing Arab nationalists in the region. He saw that as the best way of keeping it within the American orbit as the Cold War was gathering momentum." The Eisenhower administration including Secretary of State John Foster Dulles was initially quite sympathetic towards the Arabist agenda of Roosevelt's and his colleagues and willing to oppose Middle Eastern regimes seen "as backing the Soviet Union rather than the U.S." In discussing Roosevelt's role Wilford describes him as being among "the most important intelligence officers of their generation in the Middle East." This is an account of the nation’s first intelligence agency the Office of Special Services O.S.S. — how it operated what it accomplished and how it laid the basis for the present Central Intelligence Agency — and how its charismatic founder “Wild Bill” Donovan established control over it recruited its staff and most importantly sold Roosevelt the armed services the Allies and the rest of the country on the agency’s varied — and often bizarre — shadow warfare missions during World War II. The O.S.S.’s special relationship with the British the key role of academics and its embarrassing connection with the Soviets’ N.K.V.D. are also addressed. Smith concludes that the creation of the C.I.A. after the war owed less to the accomplishments of the O.S.S. than to Donovan’s public relations skills and the precarious military situation the country found itself in at the time.“Mr. Smith. has done an exhaustive job of research on the O.S.S. and Donovan. the book offers an honest lively portrait of an important American and the contributions good and bad that he and the O.S.S. made to the American intelligence system. Much of this book can be read for the pleasure of observing a genuine American character in action. Mr. Smith who does not fawn on his subject captures Donovan’s kinetic energy and vision.” — Philip Taubman The New York Times“This may be as close to a definitive medium-length history of OSS as we are likely to get. It draws fully on the extensive original files now available both American and British and on the recent flood of secondary writing. The author has a sure grasp of the basic history of the war. His narrative chapters put OSS firmly into that wider context and his perspectives and judgments ring true. And there are excellent chapters on the usually neglected Research and Analysis section and on the relations between OSS and Soviet intelligence agencies. an important book.” — Foreign Affairs; Signed by Notable Personage Related . The American Road to Nuremberg; The Documentary Record 1944-1945
Stanford CA: Hoover Institution Press 1982. Presumed First Edition First printing. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. 24 cm. xi 1 259 1 pages. Notes. Documents. Bibliography. Index. DJ has slight wear and soiling. Pencil erasure residue on fep. Bradley F Smith was a ground-breaking historian of the Second World War and intelligence. He was born in 1931. He joined the air force. After four years' service he went to Berkeley to study history and then on a Fulbright scholarship to Munich where he honed his skills in German documentary sources. In the 1970s he began to write the books which would make his name as a scholar. The journal Foreign Affairs welcomed Reaching Judgment at Nuremberg 1977 as "a superbly written and novelesque account which is also a sound work of historical scholarship". The Shadow Warriors: OSS and the Origins of the CIA 1983 was like all his books meticulously researched and it remains the best general account of the Office of Strategic Services the US's Second World War intelligence agency. Bradley F. Smith sets forth the documentary record of the development of the Nuremberg trial system. The basic plan for the Nuremberg trials was formulated in the 1944 and early 1945 almost exclusively by a handful of American government officials. In an effort to counter Henry Morgenthau's harsh plan for de-industrialization of Germany and summary execution of Nazi leaders these officials devised a plan aimed to punish the guilty eliminate the threat of a Nazi revival in Germany and avoid the economic destruction of central Europe. Through a series of conferences and political maneuvers the Nuremberg trial plan was revised in draft after draft. From the Moscow Doctrine which warned those responsible for atrocities committed in occupied territories to the London Charter which laid down the trial system for surviving leaders of the Third Reich and Nazi criminal organizations these documents reveal the vision purpose and technical competence of the officials responsible for the trial plan.
