‎Newton Abbot Devon England: Guild Publishing 1984. 112 pages b/w photos line drawings - owners name on fep - The 12 new classes of steam locomotive produced by British Railways after nationalisation in 1948 were known collectively as the 'Standards' of which the Britannia Pacifics were best known. In this book Rodger Bradley analyses the characteristics of each of the 12 types from the initial design concept to construction weaknesses modifications and performance. He describes the results of the locomotive exchanges in 1948 which provided competitive trails of engines from existing schools of locomotive design and used as a basis for evaluating the performance of features desirable for inclusion in the standard range. These final steam locomotives of British Railways were very much an amalgam of the practices of the four main line companies though the style and selection of components was considerably influenced by the majority of former LMS personnel in the design team and the Railway Executive but in operation the engines were no better and no worse than their predecessors. As for long term reliability and maintenance needs their potential was never realised since the oldest lasted in BR service for little more than a decade and a half and most for less than that. . A popular Victorian literary character was Mr. Verdant Green an Oxford Freshman hero of several books written and illustrated by a Midland vicar Rev. Edward Bradley 1827-1889 under the pen-name of Cuthbert Bede. Bradley had learned wood-engraving from no less than George Cruikshank but as Houfe notes "remained very much the amateur illustrating his own books.and others in a jolly and careless style." He also drew for Punch and "was one of the first illustrators to satirise photography." This drawing jolly and careless shows two sketches of the hapless freshman unsuccessfully defending a wicket--the drawings appear in more finished wood-engraved form on pages 100-101 of The Adventures of Mr. Verdant Green-- and a more formal portrait done in the year in which The Adventures first appeared thus making it an Oxford literary and cricket item all in one. It also includes a description of infertile lands in England with suggestions for improvements a description of gardens in Great Britain with improvements for the growing of fruit trees and a chapter on the maintaining of grapevines. It was first published in English in 1721 as A philosophical account of the works of nature. First edition and a lovely copy. Bradley 1688-1732 first professor of botany at Cambridge was one of the earliest British writers to treat agriculture as a science. His writings were prolific including about twenty volumes dealing with agriculture. This book is one of his most important. "Cost of production was beginning to interest farmers more then it had done. For a hundred years the business had been steadily becoming more commercial. Instead of being rich because he grew a lot to eat a man was beginning to find that he was only rich if he grew a lot to sell and naturally he wanted to sell at a profit. To do that he must know what it cost him to grow the produce.and so writers began to insert costings in their books and Bradley was one of the earliest to do this. The Complete Body contains numerous costs but I suspect they were of common knowledge rather than anything more immediately collected and closely scrutinized yet they must have been accurate enough by the author's readers as not unreasonable."-Fussell I pp. 111-12. Bradley ca. 1688-1732 was an English botanist and gardener appointed to be the first Professor of Botany at Cambridge University a Fellow of the Royal Society and the first to publish a pineapple recipe in English. Fussell Old English Farming Books provides Bradley an entire chapter but only on the grounds that Bradley was the most prolific author of the period 1700-1730.
